I'm currently reading Treasure Island aloud to my son and he's loving it but we've nearly finished it.

Any ideas what I can read to him next? He likes adventures.

Thanks

The Coral Island, Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Call of the Wild, one of the Shackleton biographies, Roald Dahl’s Flying Solo. Any of those any good?

Arthur Ransome is quite gentle adventure but is really good. My dad read The Hobbit to me when I was a little younger than that - either that or Lord of the Rings is surprisingly fun to read aloud.

Ursula le Guin is also very fun to read aloud - start with the Earthsea Quartet. Terry Pratchett might also work?

I ordered an illustrated copy of The Hobbit. And will then work my way through the other brilliant suggestions - thank you.

My DH read the hobbit to Dd around that age. Actually they used to alternate reading a chapter, but same thing. So lovely for kids to be read to as long as possible.

My DS and I are enjoying Anthony Horowitz.

Imtootired · 16/05/2020 07:51

My son and I are really enjoying Percy Jackson

Smith by Leon Garfield, Cue for Treason by Geoffrey Trease.

I would say The Hobbit too, and a brilliant book for 11 year olds is Holes, although he may prefer to read that to himself. I also rate Katherine Rundell for the adventure factor. Northern Lights?

I second Holes.

In a slightly different vein - Wonder is very good.

Cressida Cowell's Wizards of Once series
Alan Snow's Here Be Monsters
Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series (starts with The Wee Free Men)
The Hobbit
Around the World in 80 Days

My 10yo has enjoyed Jules Verne, Robinson Crusoe (which surprised me) and most recently The Kon-Tiki Expedition.

Also suggest The Dark is Rising. Jack London's books might be worth a look too. Second Leon Garfield.
