My dd is not an avid reader but she does love history, particularly the tudors.
Can anyone recommend any books or authors for her please?

A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley is about Mary Queen of Scots. I remember liking Playing Beattie Bow, which is about a girl going back in time to Victorian Sydney, and Midnight is a Place also set in Victorian times.

MergeDragons · 08/04/2020 21:04

stravaganza by mary hoffman - set in a sort of alternate 16th century italy

SpicedCamomile · 08/04/2020 21:05

Just did a little Google and Lucy Worsley's Eliza Rose, set in Tudor times, looks quite good too.

bookmum08 · 08/04/2020 21:07

Jacqueline Wilson's historical novels - Hetty Feather series, Opal Plumstead.

PeacockPies · 08/04/2020 21:07

My dd was (and is at 16) exactly the same. She's never done the Tudors at school but she loves reading about them. She has the Tudor family tree on her bedroom wall...

Her absolutely favourites were the 'My Story' series. They are often on The Book People site as a box set.

if she is a strong reader, you could give her Hilary Mantel (Wolf Hall etc). They are written for adults and are hard to get started on but very well written.

At the Sign of the Sugared Plum (and others in the same series) are good & aimed at 12 year olds.

PeacockPies · 08/04/2020 21:10

I just went to look on The Book People and they have closed down!

Anyway, this is the series. They aren't all by the same author.

Not Tudor's, but she's probably old enough to try a Georgette Heyer. A bit of mystery and adventure, gentle romance and all encapsulate the Georgian period beautifully without ever seeming false or strained. "Arabella" might be a good one to start with.

notyounanbread · 08/04/2020 21:46

Philippa Gregory does a teen series called Order of Darkness. The first one is set in 1460 in Europe. It's not the Tudors but similar time period.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 08/04/2020 22:26

My story as per PP & Lady Grace Mysteries (both possibly a little young depending on what kind of not avid reader she is) are adored here so too

Traveller in time
King of shadows
Cue for treason

Lucy Worsley’s series too

MrsHoolie · 08/04/2020 22:56

Wormswood is pretty good

FoxInABox · 09/04/2020 00:06

Not a book- but I highly recommend The Six the musical, fantastic for any Tudors fan. Lots of videos of the songs on YouTube. Hopefully once things are back to normal they will resume their tour.

timtam23 · 12/04/2020 12:22

I, Coriander by Sally Gardner - it is set slightly later than Tudor times (mid-1600s). It's a really gripping book, aimed at around age 12 I would think but I enjoyed reading it too!

Oh yes Mary Stewart Arthurian series is great, I read a lot of Jean plaidy at this age.

LIZS · 12/04/2020 18:34

The Other Boleyn Girl , the White Queen etc

MiniTheMinx · 12/04/2020 18:35

I was a similar age when I read a few Jean Plaidy.

AravisTarkheena · 12/04/2020 18:35

I’ve just finished The Crystal Cave and it is an. Absolute. Banger. It is quite sophisticated though - not sure all 12 yr olds would get on with it. I can second the recommendation for At The Sign of the Sugared Plum, theres alps Witch Child by Celia Rees which I was obsessed with at that age. A Girl of Ink and Stars night also be worth a try?

Cyberworrier · 12/04/2020 18:38

Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliffe about Roman Britain
Children of the New Forest by Captain Marryat set in the English civil war
And there are so many good books for children set in ww2, eg When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.

KateF · 12/04/2020 18:40

I think I read all my mum's Jean Plaidy's at around that age. Rosemary Sutcliffe was another favourite but not for the Tudors I don't think. My dd enjoyed the Flavia Gemina series by Caroline Lawrence.

QueenofLouisiana · 12/04/2020 23:16

A range of historical periods are written about by Emma Carroll- historically accurate, well written.
I loved Jean Plaidy and Georgette Hayer at that age. Be careful with Philippa Gregory’s adult books- Wildacre for instance is really not suitable.

BlueChampagne · 14/04/2020 12:20

The Woolpack by Cynthia Harnett
I, Claudius for some mad Romans
Charles Dickens
Leon Garfield also worth looking for
Josephine Tey The Daughter of Time
Joan Aitken is fun for alternative history.

ludicrouslemons · 14/04/2020 12:22

I read a lot of Robert westall at that age, wwii stuff

SirVixofVixHall · 14/04/2020 12:29

Please don’t give a 12 year old Wolf Hall ! The death scenes of people being tortured and burnt at the stake are the most searingly awful things I have ever read . I still feel green if I think of it. It is harrowing and incredibly gruesome, and you can’t even comfort yourself with the thought that it didn’t actually happen.
