Recommendations for an avid 10 year old reader

My DS loves reading and has just come downstairs and complained he's run out of books to read (despite me worrying that Santa had gone too far on the book front). He's read all the wimpy kid books, all Harry Potter, Football Academy, Star Wars, all David Walliams, all Roald Dahl. He just devours them.

Would appreciate any other recommendations. I think he'd like something a bit meatier now to really get into.

ds10 in similar state.

has very much enjoyed all the different Rick Riordan series, has your DS tried those?

now enjoying the Itch books by Simon Mayo, and also various books by Philip Reeve. Eva Ibbotson and Emma Carroll are two other good ones to look out for.

How to train your dragon series
Middle school the worst years of my life
The treehouse collection - my son didn't like these but lots do.
Tom gates but is a very quick read.
I wish wimpy kid would bring out more!

june2007 · 25/02/2020 22:32

Ofcourse CS lewis books and Tolkein as well.

ImportantWater · 25/02/2020 22:36

Mine likes all the books you mention, and also, weirdly, the old Jennings books...Rick Riordan is a big favourite and so is the Dark Lord series by Jamie Thomson. He is currently enjoying Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones

unexpectedthird · 25/02/2020 22:38

The Stormseeker's Island, Varjack Paw, The Day I was Erased and Malamander are all very good and popular with kids I know of that age.

unexpectedthird · 25/02/2020 22:39

Oh and the Artemis Fowl series are fab.

MusicTeacherSussex · 25/02/2020 22:44

His dark materials trilogy

The Narnia chronicles

Stravaganza

I hear discworld is addictive though I never got into them

My DS is 10 and loves reading. He enjoys lots of comic strip/ graphic novels, inc. Dogman, anything by Phoenix magazine (he really liked the 'Lost Tales' book, which I read and also really enjoyed - culturally interesting) and the Amulet series. 'Meatier' literature he's really enjoyed includes:

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
The Phantom Tollbooth
Aquila magazine in general
The Little Prince

He chose to try reading Lord of the Flies (slightly inspired by Dogman Lord of the Fleas Confused) but is only two days into it, so not sure how that will go down longer term. You could try the Dark is Rising set of books - I read Over Sea Under Stone that age and loved it. Or Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner - one of my all-time favourite books. They're popular with schools, but I plan to try him on the RJ Palacio 'Wonder' books soon, which are fantastic. I recently read Superfudge by Judy Blume and thought it hilarious and good. It does have a Father Christmas spoiler in it though.

Another vote for Rick Riordan and Artemis Fowl/Eoin Colfer here (DS aged 10). But also frantically scribbling down the other suggestions as DS reads for at least an hour a day so can blitz through each series pretty quickly.

He also likes Garfield and Asterix, but I'm guessing those weren't quite the recommendations you were after...

mamalovebird · 26/02/2020 10:29

Some fab recommendations, thank you.

He started The Northern lights but didn't seem to get on with the fantasy style language so looking for something similar. He liked 'Who let the Gods out'.

Someone else recommended Charlie Higson books so I bought a job lot from ebay last night. Will scour tonight for some of the above!

Wizards of Once, Nevermoor (trials of morrigan Crow), Wed Wabbit, Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books and then anything else by him, the Hobbit.

Ds has a copy of Lord of the Rings he's saving for when he runs out of other stuff. Aunt and cousin swear it's the best ever, dad says it's terrible, I say it's OK but skip as much as you want especially the elven singing - so he's curious.

LostInTheColonies · 26/02/2020 10:37

Katherine Rundell - the Explorer, the Wolf Wilder, various others that I can't remember the names of. Great use of language as well as great adventure stories.

bookmum08 · 26/02/2020 10:50

I would hold off on Robert Muchamore for a couple of years - very violent with lots of sex and drugs.
This is a good age to find his genre. Go to the library and just see what titles and book covers grab his attention.

ImportantWater · 26/02/2020 11:33

I was about ten when I read Lord of the Rings and once the fellowship split up I basically skipped everything that wasn't Frodo and Sam, dipping back in for Treebeard and right back out again for anything involving Gondor or Rohan. I have read it a few times since, properly.

Hilda41 · 27/02/2020 13:29

Ross Welford is good -The 1,000 year old boy, The Dog who saved the world....
Has he tried the "My brother is a superhero" series by David Solomns?

BlueChampagne · 27/02/2020 13:41

A Series of Unfortunate Events
Skulduggery Pleasant
Roman Mysteries
Jules Verne
Just William
Edge Chronicles (will keep him going for a bit)
