Toddler books with detailed illustrations

Hello, looking for suggestions as MN has come up with some hits in the past! DS is 13 months and in a phase where he really loves spotting and naming things (animals, vehicles, household objects etc) in the detailed illustrations in Peepo, Each Peach Pear Plum, Shirley Hughes' toddler books, Julia Donaldson's the whale and the snail. Any suggestions for books with interesting, varied illustrations that aren't encyclopedia/vocabulary books or stories for much older kids?

"Peck peck peck" by Lucy cousins might fit the bill. Its not detailed in a Shirley Hughes sort of way, much bolder and simpler, but lots of things to spot and holes to poke little fingers in. We got it for my son at age 2 and he loved it.

Julia Donaldson books are great. My DS loves the centre spread in The Detective Dog because it’s so detailed. What the Ladybird Heard has a ladybird to spot on each page.

The slinky malinki books would be good as well.

The Yellow Balloon by Charlotte Dematons when he is a little bit older.

Oh wonderful, I had forgotten about Richard Scarry and don't know the others, thanks for the suggestions!

Just Imagine and You Choose by Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt

SoCrimeaRiver · 14/02/2020 10:25

There are Julie Donaldson and Nick Sherratt books too e.g. Goat goes to playgroup, hippo has a hat. The detail is great for my 18 month old

Maybe your DS would like a 'Wimmelbook'. Lots of detailed illustrations and things to spot and name.

For example:

Animalia by Graeme Base

Each page is a different letter of the alphabet.
Lovely alliterative phrases for each letter and lots of things to name.

The Usbourne 100 or 1000 First Words books are brilliant for this. DD has 100 First Words in French and 1000 First Words in English and she can spend ages just spotting all the things to find.

Some great ideas, thank you. You're right, he would love some of the 1000 words type books as there's so much to see. I like having stories to read so some of those sound perfect too.

You Choose is great! You’re Called What is another that may fit the bill. And Baby’s Catalogue by the Ahlbergs.
