My nine year old is a mature girl and an advanced reader. She’s read her way through the Hunger Games trilogy and devours every book in her path except girly books. She refuses to read things like Ann of Green Gables that I liked at her age. Her book preference is slightly dark series. Loved Harry Potter but has read them all more times than I could count.
Her older friends love Stranger Things. Due to the rating on it and her age I won’t let her watch the tv series. I’m open to letting her read the books.
Anyone able to provide a review?

Like was said on other thread, they are tie-ins, they won't make much sense, nor really suitable for that age.

If you're worried about age ratings then I'm surprised you let her read the Hunger Games at 9yo. The language is readable for a lot of 9yos, but the content isn't.

I wouldn't let her read the books if you won't let her see the films because they'll just whet her appetite for them.
There's plenty of books that are not girlie and suitable for 9yos. Diana Wynne Jones, Narnia, Alex Rider, Black Beauty, Young Bond, Joan Aiken, Geoffrey Trease, Eagle of the Nineth, etc. All ones mine read around 9yo

If you want something dark and quite scary try the Lockwood and Co series by Jonathan Stroud about a team of ghost hunters. The Screaming Staircase is the first. Or the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy is very popular. Dark but quite funny too.

Try her with the Inkheart series - they are pretty dark but well written. Stranger Things was a TV series first so I would hold out no hope for the quality of the books.

Alan Garner is another who write fairly dark books as is Jenny Nimmo.

Gregor the overlander series. I'd normally say it's a bit old for that age, but it's younger audience wise than the hunger games. We listedned to it in the car and DS was only 6 or 7 at the time (but I always adjust age ratings when I'm reading or there when DS is reading, as opposed to him reading on his own.)

Northern Lights?

My 12 year old watched Stranger Things and it is the very limit of what I would let him watch. I definitely wouldn’t let him read The Hunger Games though!!

The books aren’t really suitable for someone who hasn’t seen the tv series. They’re also rubbish compared to the series.
