When my son was this age there were all manner of books - historical fiction, spy books, humour, mythological retellings! - with both male and female heroines. Now almost 11, he loves David Baddiel, David Walliams, Frank Cottrell-Boyce. He's enjoyed Judy Blume and the Percy Jackson novels, amongst a bunch of others.

Now either I am old and tired, or I just can't find them for looking, but I'm looking for a similar range for my DD. Yes, she has access to all the books mentioned above, but she has a soft spot for kittens, magic and female characters. I was like that at her age; I loved female heroes and (because it was the 80s) my favourites were often the sidekicks.

There's an absolute glut of Magical Animal ghostwritten ones - sort, repetitive, honestly dull - and injured rescue animals, but I'm really looking for titles with a bit more to them now.

Spies. Crime solvers. Modern school stories. Myths. Historical. Adventure. Epic fantasy mermaid trilogy. She loves the new She-Ra show, for example, which has so much going on in terms of plot complexity and character interaction. I'd love for something like that in book form.

Female heroines preferred (she'd like it) but she's only 7, so we'll leave The Hunger Games and Jacqueline Wilson for a while.

Just something with a bit more plot depth than Rainbow Fairies :)

Enid Blyton School stories?

All of the horsey books?

The Moomintrolls?

Paddington and Olga da Polga the Guinea Pig (funnier than Paddington IMO).

TempestHayes · 16/12/2019 00:02

Mallory Towers is a favourite, loved those when I was a kid too. We're reading the Moomin series at the moment :)

Olda de Polga I've not looked into, so I will, thanks!

Also - the Which Witch books and anything by Eva Ibbotson. CS Lewis and Howl's Moving Castle.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/12/2019 00:03

I LOVE Olga da Polga :) the anti-heroine guinea pig.

The Ramona books by Beverly Cleary.

Ramona is the heroine, she’s 4 in the first book and 9 in the last. I read them when I was a child, and I am just finishing them with DD(8). There a couple more now. Dd has loved them, I have loved them all over again.

They are about Ramona growing up in her ordinary family in surban Oregon. No magic, fairies or cute animals. Just home, school, friends etc through the eyes of a little girl. They are very sweet abd very funny, I have no idea why they are not better known over here. Despite being set in the US abd the original ones going back to the 1960s, they are completely timeless.

Anything by Nina Bawden. Charlotte's Web. Babe (if it is in book form).

I also liked Trixie Belden, although she is American. There was a younger version too involving a girl with a cat.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/12/2019 00:11

Now I'm going to go nuts unless I find what the books with the girl and cat were ... In searching, I found this list

Another vote for the wolves of willoughby chase.

SummerLightning · 16/12/2019 00:24

Nevermoor
Wizards of once (Cressida Cowell - stronger female characters than how to train your dragon)
Anna at war (you might want to vet first as its about the holocaust)

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 16/12/2019 00:28

We've just started Terry Pratchet with my 7 year old dd. The Wee Free Men is the first of a trilogy - 9 year old girl discovers she's a witch (a very lovely and quirky description of magic) and rescues her brother/ the world, while befriending (and temporarily leading) a band of miniature hard drinking, hard fighting men. It's really good!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/12/2019 10:52

There are five books in the Tiffany series. Not all are suitable for children. I Shall wear Midnight is a very dark book indeed

theconstantinoplegardener · 16/12/2019 11:03

Would she like the Killer Cat books, by Anne Fine? He is full of attitude and definitely not needy.

wejammin · 16/12/2019 11:07

Have you looked on A Mighty Girl? www.amightygirl.com/books

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/12/2019 11:11

Isadora Moon
Hotel Flamingo (although it has talking animals- but not 100 variations of same plot)
Max the Detective Cat
Hubble Bubble
Mr Penguin

dameofdilemma · 16/12/2019 11:30

If you took her to the library, what might she pick out?

Some great suggestions on this list, many of which dd has really enjoyed but she also loves reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series (which I never would have picked out for her but she picked for herself).

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 16/12/2019 15:13

Sorry @YetAnotherSpartacus, I thought there were three. Might have to vet the rest before I read them out loud in that case!!
