Hi everyone,

It’s the first time i post here. Up until now, I was reading your books reccomendations, being secretely grateful for all the great ideas.

But now i have a question with no answer so far, perhaps someone can help.

My 9 years old is passionate about middle age. He loves knights and castels and asked for just one thing for Christmas: a book about knights, a story. Of course we have lots of book about what is what in castel age, but he is asking for a fiction book set in that time.

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

I'm sure you'll find some good things there. The age range is quite spread but with a bit of looking, you could probably get quite a few with knights and castles etc.

Rosemary Sutcliff wrote some wonderful historical novels for children, try Knight's Fee, it could be exactly what you want.

Are they for him to read or you to read too him or bit of both? Have you thought about some of the classics like Robin Hood? We have a set of books Called a knight in training, not sure if they'd be a bit young but worth a look maybe.

We're big on fantasy and sometimes they overlap, Merlin for example. I've read my two 10th kingdom and bought Ladyhawk (not read it yet so can't confirm if it's age appropriate). OH and my bf read the Hobbit and LOTR at 12 and 10 respectively but I don't know if that's for everyone.
If all else fails get your pen out. That's what I did, self published one kids book (about a squirrel at Xmas) and one I'd classify as teenage (witches, dragons knights etc).

Oh Ivanhoe. If you go classics get a good modern translation though makes masses of difference. I have an old translation of the Iliad and a modern of the Oddessy. The old one is boring even for me 🤪 tons easier and more enjoyable with the modern one.

What about a children’s version of the King Arthur /Knights of the Round Table stories?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 04/12/2019 20:47

Terry deary wrote some novels set in Tudor times www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01K8ZOEVM/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tu00_p30_i7?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Also a little off piste but the Redwall books by Brian Jaques are about a medieval abbey all populated by anthropomorphic animals. There is a mouse knight called Martin the Warrior who appears in many of the books. My brother wasn't a great reader but I remember him absolutely devouring these at a similar age. If he likes them there are 22 novels in the series...

I love Knights Fee but 9 may be a little young. The Wool Pack is excellent though.

Oh, wow! Love your ideas! Smile

Now I have to go one by one and try to find those books in German or Spanish, since my child doesn't read English yet. Sad

I am going through the initial link from @Lulualla, lots of good books there. I am looking forward to reading some of them myself. :)

@joCmummy, I love your idea of getting my pen out! Maybe that's exactely what i'll end up doing! I did read to him, one year ago, The Hobbit and LOTR, he LOVED LOVED these books. They are a bit difficult to read on his own, though.

I will definitely look into T.H. White and the knight of the round table, might be a good fit, although i am a bit unsure, are they a bit old?

@Wigeon, do you have a specific book in mind? When I search on amazon, so many come up, i am not sure which to pick? As always, I am a bit worried of children versions, since they could easily ruin a great story.

Another off piste suggestion- The Sterkarm Handshake.

Throws in a bit of sci-fi

MamadeLyj · 05/12/2019 09:00

@BearAusten Thank you for the links! I think Howard Pyle book would be a great fit! Also the Barefoot Book of Knights for my 6 years old - pity that isn´t translated to Spanish or German! Perhaps I should do the translation myself and then print the book with the original pictures... is that even allowed?
Hmm

And.... found the Barefoot book of Knights in Spanish! Bought it!

So happy, now they each have a book for Christmas! Thank you all!!

Will look for the others though, their birthdays come right after Christmas :)

If anyone can recommend a good children version of Robin Hood and perhaps, if there is, The 3 Mosqueteers, would love to hear!!

If you get your pen out type it up and self publish via Amazon. It's free and you can order draught copies of books properly printed and bound! It's brilliant. 😁

Wigeon · 05/12/2019 21:49

OP, Usborne is usually good quality here - we’ve got the Greek Myths book in this series which is good, although the reviews for King Arthur are a bit mixed. But lots of people seem to like it!

Or this one is the classic retelling for children.
