Book recommendations for a 13 year old

Looking for recommendations of recently published books for my 13 year old DS. He started reading books recommended for age 10+ when he was 8, so has read and reread many popular series, such as His Dark Materials, the Old Kingdom series, Mortal Engines, the Leviathan series, and so on. He also enjoys adult science fiction. What new books are your teenagers enjoying?

Anyone? Mostly asking for new books to avoid sounding like I'm dismissing suggestions with 'read it', 'read it'...'wasn't interested', he has read a lot. Any recommendations are welcome though.

Google jordanhill school reading lists. They do S1/2 and S3/4 versions. If you're in England that roughly covers 12/13 and 14/15. It's got a good broad selection of stuff, some older and some newer, across a range of genres.

Dear Evan Hansen
Warhead - true story of a teen who nearly saved the world
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (not new I know)

My DC enjoyed the curious incident of the dog in the night time at that age

Has he read the new Michael Grant series? "Monster"...

Also Scott Westerfield's "imposters"? There is a new one out in that series, shatter city.

neal shusterman's "scythe" series is also really popular and the latest one is out soon.

Pitticus Lore? "I am number four"
Jason Wallace "encounters",
Sarah j Maas? "Throne of glass"
James Dashner "maze runner"?
Cassandra Clare? "City of Bones"
Leigh Bardugo? "Grisha series
Veronica Roth "carve the mark" - sequel was out recently.

Hope these recommendations are helpful.

Has he read Patrick Ness Chaos Walking series? If he liked His Dark Materials I am sure he would like this.

ManiacalLapwing · 12/11/2019 19:26

He's read the Chaos Walking trilogy, the Carve the Mark duology, the Gone series by Michael Grant but not the new Monster series, and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. He found Maze Runner too scary when he was 10 but might try it again now.

I'll look these up on the library website and see what he's interested in. Thanks for the suggestions :).

Anything by Monica Hughes, Susan Cooper, and John Christopher ( except "The Pendulum Swings")
Also Robert Swindells.
Garth Nix's "Keys to the Kingdom" series and "Shade's Children" are good too.
There's Andre Norton and Robert A. Heinlein's juvenile novels too - do be careful to get the juvenile ones though, some of the adult ones have a fair bit of (not explicit) sex in them.

Hi,
Depending on tastes, I'd add - Tolkien, Sean Yeager and Bartimaeus. Also, Hitchhikers guide books.

ManiacalLapwing · 17/11/2019 09:26

Thanks, he's read the Dark is Rising sequence, Keys to the Kingdom, The Hobbit and LOTR, the Bartimaeus sequence and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. I'll check out the others.

Our local library has the annoying habit of getting the second or third book in a series once it becomes popular, without purchasing the previous books, which makes things difficult Angry.

Robert Muchamore - Cherub series and Henderson's boys series

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 19/11/2019 23:55

The Septimus Heap series, if he liked Bartimaeus.
Or the Connie Companion quartet.

ManiacalLapwing · 24/11/2019 10:46

I've got the three books from the new Monster series from the library for now, this thread has been very helpful. Thanks!

My 12 yr old adores the Hitchikers Guide series, the Hobbit (but nothing LOTR), all Phillip Pullman and says that the Hunger Games books changes her life 😂. For sci fi / fantasy, she’s got a series by Garth Nix ready to go - the bookseller got into a heated discussion with a mad fan in the shop when I was buying - there seem to be ardent fans!
(She also loves a good murder which the US writers do well - there’s one based on map coordinates of the Fibonacci sequence being laid across San Francisco).
Marisha Pessl’s Neverworld Wake is one you could read at the same time
