What other books have they enjoyed or would you recommend?
10year old DS, reluctant to read if the book looks too thick, likes some illustrations to break it up.
Really enjoyed the DOAWK series, Tom Gates etc

Should add he is very able just reluctant, quite mature for his age so not too worried about any violent content

I have a 9 year old boy that sounds very similar... He's a good reader, but hates it.. It's very frustrating to be honest.
He likes DOAWK and Tom gates, has also enjoyed the 39 storey treehouse series as well.

I'm following this for more ideas!!

FloraMacDonald · 05/11/2019 14:06

DOAWK, Treehouse books & Tom Gates here too! Also, bizarrely, the QI books of General Ignorance.

Arewenearly · 05/11/2019 14:13

David Walliams books, Harry Potter.

MyEnormousTurnip · 05/11/2019 14:18

Joe Cowley series
Alex Rider
James Patterson Middle School

I’ve just bought him Adrian Mole to try but he’s not started it yet.

ktjb39 · 05/11/2019 14:24

Both my boy's loved the Dogman series of books - they are cartoons and can get through them really quickly plus they were funny!

FindaPenny · 05/11/2019 14:46

My daughter also enjoyed the wimpy kid series, she likes David walliams alot and the goosebumps series of books. My daughter isn't keen on them, but might he like the horrible histories?

DippyAvocado · 05/11/2019 14:48

Absolutely the 13-storey treehouse series. Also World's worst children/teachers by David Williams.

NeverTwerkNaked · 05/11/2019 14:59

Definitely 13 story treehouse. He really loved those.
There's another Wimpy kid book out today!
Following for more ideas as my son is just reading wimpy kid and the treehouse books on rotation!

OhTheTastyNuts · 05/11/2019 15:06

Captain Underpants?

bsc · 05/11/2019 15:08

What about the graphic novel versions of Alex Rider? First one is Stormbreaker.
Also, Cressida Cowell's How to Train Your Dragon series are v well written, v funny, lots of illustrations throughout.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 05/11/2019 15:11

Most of the ones mentioned and also Fighting Fantasy books.

LetMeLayAmongTheStars · 06/11/2019 06:34

He’s read the treehouse, worlds worst children, captain underpants & dogman.
I don’t think he would like the horrible histories books as he dislikes the tv series.
The other recommendations I will look Into though, thank you so much everyone.

@winesolveseverything it is frustrating isn’t it but I just think if I can persevere with it and keep him into books that are even below his reading level then at least I am keeping him reading and will form the habit Wink

FWIW I have two children who love the horrible histories books but utterly detest the TV show

Howtotrainyourhamster · 11/11/2019 17:13

My 8 year old really likes Percy Jackson series. Also largely reads wimpy kid and Tom gates usually!

iloveredwine · 11/11/2019 17:32

my 11 year old is a very reluctant reader and liked the wimpy kids books. Got him joe cowley book the private blog. its very similar to wimpy kid a bit older i guess but quite familiar to them

insanepizza · 11/11/2019 17:34

Peter Jackson?

Hunger games is surprisingly straight forward and a bit older and more exciting but may you need a bit of Alex Ryder / Peter Jackson in between.

insanepizza · 11/11/2019 17:35

Also radio boy (can't remember who by) and David baddiel books are excellent!

WhereverIMayRoam · 11/11/2019 19:28

He might enjoy the Timmy Failure series which my 8 and 10 year old find very entertaining. Not too thick and there are illustrations!

There’s also the Big Nate series which is done in a comic strip style. I can’t comment on how good they are as we’ve got the box set for ds for Christmas.

IHateWashingUp2 · 11/11/2019 19:38

Hunger Games is vastly different from DWK, and not very appropriate for a 9/10 year old!

insanepizza · 11/11/2019 20:05

@IHateWashingUp2 yes it is, which is why I suggested other things in between but it is extremely popular even with less enthusiastic readers and many of our year 6 read it. OP doesn't say whether a year 6 age 10 or a year 5.

mrsmoppp · 11/11/2019 20:48

My dd loves the dork diarys

EmCamB · 17/11/2019 09:14

I suggest Sean Yeager and Artemis Fowl. Both are fun and light reads.

Lorddenning1 · 17/11/2019 09:22

My 8 year old has got into the roald dahl books :) he started with Charlie and the chocolate factory, Iv bought his a collection of 15 books for Christmas that I know he will love, they were my fave as a child and it makes me happy that he enjoys reading them too.
