My daughter's ten with a good reading ability. She's asking for a good detective novel for christmas. She loves reading David walliams books, but wants something different to read. Any recommendations are welcome. Thank you.

I read an awesome one when I was about 10, that had several short mysteries inside with clues to the identity throughout the story. I remember liking that it was quite hard to solve them!

Foiled again it was called, authors surname was Butler but I can’t temember the rest. I think the same author wrote a few.

Try 'Itch'. If she likes it, it's a trilogy.

SamBeckettslastleap · 17/10/2019 14:42

The London eye mystery

Robin Stevens detective society books

Enb76 · 17/10/2019 14:47

The Murder Most Unladylike series is very good and appreciated by my just turned 11 year old. robin-stevens.co.uk/the-books/

Also, Carl Hiaasen www.carlhiaasen.com/young-readers.shtml

Clementine Beauvais series based in Cambridge www.amazon.co.uk/s?ref=nb_sb_noss_1&i=stripbooks&k=sesame+seade&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Mine is beginning to get into Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes as well.

ProfessorLayton1 · 17/10/2019 14:50

Roman mysteries - it is a series and both my daughters enjoyed them

onemouseplace · 17/10/2019 14:53

DD is the same age and loves a detective novel. She likes Robin Stevens, Kat Wolfe Investigates by Lauren St John and the Ruby Redfort Books by Lauren Child.

She's recently graduated to Agatha Christie.

SingingLily · 17/10/2019 15:04

I second the Murder Most Unladylike series by Robin Stevens and Kat Wolfe Investigates by Lauren St John. My ten year old niece was completely immersed in them, and she's a voracious reader.

Lyricallie · 17/10/2019 15:07

A blast from the past but what Nancy Drew? I'm only in my 20s and I used to love them.

Simkin · 17/10/2019 15:07

The Ruby Redfort books (Lauren Child) are good. A bit more spy-y than detective-y maybe.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 17/10/2019 15:25

The Labours of Hercules would be a good 'starter' Agatha Christie for that age, as it's a collection of short stories, rather than a full on novel

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 17/10/2019 15:26

Or some of Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries

WTFdidwedo · 17/10/2019 15:28

I loved Roman Mysteries and also a series about a spy called Montmorency by Eleanor Updale. I vaguely remember absolutely loving it at about 13/14 but it was quite suitable for younger children. He operated in the London sewer system.

Nancy Drew was my favourite around a similar age! Might be a bit old fashioned now but I think classic books do endure.

mrsfeatherbottom · 17/10/2019 15:42

DD(9) is loving the Agatha Oddly books.

Beautiful3 · 17/10/2019 18:11

Wow, loving the recommendations on here. I'd better get shopping. Thanks everyone.

Emil and the detectives is old but has stood the test of time in my opinion.

They've updated them. Badly.
They're in first person, and too much of admiring themselves in the mirror and thinking about fashion.
Get the older books if you want them.
There's also the Hardy Boys which aren't as cringeworthy as Nancy Drew. I think because there's two of them so it doesn't always end with a "oh we all think you're wonderful Nancy" scene.

I loved 3 Investigator books, but I don't think they're easy to get. My dc loved the ones I still had.

Other detective books that mine enjoyed:
Lone Pine Series
Josephine Tey
Alex Rider

INeedNewShoes · 18/10/2019 10:12

The Philip Pullman Sally Lockhart series is brilliant.

Sally is the 20 year old heroine who, although not officially a detective, ends up investigating dodgy goings on.

They're great books. In fact this thread has made me want to re-read them.

There is some reference to opium but that went over my head when I read them as a young teenager!

Yes, I loved those as well and was really surprised to find out they are out of print.

Beautiful3 · 18/10/2019 12:59

Brilliant, thank you everyone.

A bit late with suggestions here but the Sinclair's Mysteries series by Katherine Woodfine is really good. Set in Edwardian England and with two young female detectives. I got one from the library for DS, who wasn't interested, but I loved it and read the whole series!
Also the White Giraffe series by Lauren St John, these are adventure mystery rather than "detective" but very gripping and also a strong young female lead character, which I really liked
