Short chapter books for 7yo with boy as main character

Taytotots · 27/09/2019 10:09

I'm looking for short chapter books that I can read to my boy/girl twins and they can start to read. We're enjoying Dick King Smith's 'Sophie' series, the 'Clementine' series and I have just ordered up the Winnie the witch chapter books. However, all of these have female main characters (although for sone reason my son is convinced Clementine is a boy Grin). I'm not sure I can face horrid henry. Anything else of a similar style with a male protagonist?. I'm sure I am missing something obvious!

David Walliams books are pretty good, my kids love them sure they have boy main characters

Sneezeandooops · 27/09/2019 11:40

The Judy moody range of books also have a series called Stink which is about her brother. Daughter read these and really enjoyed them. Think the author is called megan McDonald?

Sneezeandooops · 27/09/2019 11:42

Sorry me again, roald Dahl, James and the giant peach, George's marvelous medicine, charlie and the chocolate factory

Silentlysinking101 · 27/09/2019 11:44

Dave pike's captain underpants was a firm favourite with my step son at about that age

Diary of a wimpy kid

Harry Potter - not so short but a great one for boys and girls

AnnaMariaDreams · 27/09/2019 11:44

Magic treehouse are about a brother and sister.

Silentlysinking101 · 27/09/2019 11:46

Series of unfortunate events

Beast Quest are a good range, possibly a bit old yet but one's to bare in mind

Roald Dahl books are great

Enid Blyton secret seven or famous five are good, balance of male and female characters/leads

TheCatWhoLickedTheFlaps · 27/09/2019 11:49

Giraffe, the Pelly and Me - Roald Dahl
Captain Underpants
David Walliams and Gangsta Granny

zelbazinnamon · 27/09/2019 11:55

Fudge by Judy Blume
The No 1 Car Spotter by Atinuke
Akimbo by Alexander McCall Smith

StrumpersPlunkett · 27/09/2019 11:59

Stink bomb and ketchup face
The jack stalwart series

HiGunny · 27/09/2019 12:02

Captain Underpants are a big hit here (though I can't stand them)
Currently we're working our way through the Oliver Moon series (kind of a younger Harry Potter).

Igottastartthinkingbee · 27/09/2019 12:04

Jack Beechwhistle books. Don’t take long to read but a firm favourite in our house.

Also any books by Jeremy Strong. My DS has just finished ‘My Brothers Famous Bottom Takes Off’.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 27/09/2019 12:05

David wailliams Grandpa's great escape

Barbarara · 27/09/2019 12:05

I was going to say Jack Stalwart but I see it’s already mentioned.
Enid Blyton has lots of adventure stories with both sexes but with the boys taking the lead - secret seven, famous five, the __of adventure, five findouters.

RicStar · 27/09/2019 12:07

Jonny duddle jolley Roger's series.

LateToTheParty · 27/09/2019 12:09

The Kid Normal books by Greg James and Chris Smith.

LoveGrowsWhere · 27/09/2019 12:10

Dinosaur Cove series. DS was hooked on them.

Taytotots · 01/10/2019 01:59

Brilliant. Thanks so much - loads of things to look into. We have done captain underpants and dogman (i'm with HiGunny on them but dt find them hilarious). Also most of the Dahl ones. Haven't actually tried Blyton on them. I used to love them (mostly I suspect because my mum banned them). Done most of Harry Potter apart from the last scariest ones so Oliver Moon sounds like a good bet. Thanks again all.

Just William books.

If he likes animals, one dog and his boy by Eva Ibbotson is brill!

www.amazon.co.uk/One-Dog-His-Boy-Ibbotson/dp/1407124242/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3AY1HGKGGHJHJ&keywords=one+dog+and+his+boy&sprefix=one+dog+a%2Caps%2C158&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1569894685&sr=8-1

There's George's Marvelous medicine but it's not a very 'nice' story.

www.amazon.co.uk/Georges-Marvellous-Medicine-Dahl-Fiction/dp/0141365501/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1CRUZK5DMB1Q9&keywords=georges+marvellous+medicine&sprefix=georges+marv%2Caps%2C170&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1569894716&sr=8-1

The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me is good:

I like the old Anne Fine, 'Bill's new frock' - some people might find it old fashioned but I think it's good for opening a discussion on unnecessary gender stereotyping.

The Jacqueline Wilson 'Cliffhanger' is a must.

The first few books in the old 'Jeremy James' series are a huge hit here!

He's a bit young for 'Stig of the dump' and 'Tales of a fourth grade nothing', but they're ones to grow into! Just be aware that the sequel of the Judy Blume story, Superfudge, denies Father Christmas.

StrumpersPlunkett · 06/10/2019 12:34

ooh also Lemony Snikket series of unfortunate events boy and girl characters quite dark in theme though

BlueChampagne · 11/10/2019 09:19

I'd save Lemony Snickett for a bit. How about:

Beasts of Olympus
Beastly Boys books (possibly not what you think)

There's also a short series about a boy called Tom and his adventures in history with an Egyptian princess who had offended Anubis and couldn't get to the after life, but I can't remember what it's called. I'm sure someone else will enlighten me, or you could ask your local librarian.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/10/2019 09:25

The dinkin dings books would fit the bill and maybe also Alistair Fury books.

BlueChampagne · 11/10/2019 15:17

Found it! Chris Blake's Time Hunters (not to be confused with another Time Hunters series).
