12yr old grandson, not an avid reader, suggestions for books?

Hello MN

My 12yr old DGS isn't an avid reader, he would much rather be playing Fortnight or watching YouTube. He also thinks he's cooler than he really is, and older.

I mention this as I want to engage him in reading so want some 'cool' teenager-y books to buy in and have here for when he stays over (which is a fair amount as I actually love him to bits!). His Mum, my DSD has recently started a 'screen reward scheme' that 'buys' him 1/2 hour of screen time for every 2 hours of pleasure reading (as opposed to homework) and I want to encourage that too.

Any ideas most gratefully received. He tried HP but didn't get past the second book, likes conspiracy theories and myths, has a growing interest in history, and we managed to get through the wimpy kid books together a few years ago.

Thanks in advance,

There are so many great books out there. Anything written by Rick Riordan; Percy Jackson, The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, Heroes of Olympus. Anything written by Piers Torday, start with The Last Wild. The TimeRiders series by Alex Scarrow. The Half Bad trilogy by Sally Green. Shades of Magic series by VE Schwab. Anything by Diana Wynne Jones. The Last Dragonslayer series by Jasper Fforde. The Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage. Even though my oldest is now 12 I still make a little time each evening to read to my two sons. They love our special time together.

He might like Marcus Sedgwick at that age

Diamond Brothers series by Anthony Horowitz.

I loved them when I was his age.

It's about a dim witted twenty something who is a Private eye and his 13 year old brother and they solve crimes Poirot style, definitely worth a read!

I would highly recommend the Robert Muchamore books, they were the books that got me into reading at his age.
