I'm looking for a middle ground book between picture books like the gruffalo and chapter books like the worst witch.
DS is 4 nearly 5 and we are trying to make the change we have tried worst witch oliver moon rainbow magic etc.
What I am looking for is either a similar style of picture book with lots more words preferably without rhyming, or a shorter chapter book with lots of pictures.

Early Reader books - my DD particularly liked the Horrid Henry ones which are a short illustrated story in a slightly more grown up format than traditional picture books. Our library had a very good selection.

I agree with Winnie the Witch. The Gaskitt stories by Allan Ahlberg are good, and also the Mudpuddle Farm ones by Michael Morpurgo (both have lots of little pictures and short chapters).
