Funny books for reluctant readers....

Both my boys don’t like reading and my 14 year old is dyslexic with a reading age of a 10 year old. My nearly 11 year old is fine but just doesn’t enjoy reading. They like horrid Henry and ones where you choose the path the character takes but looking for something different. Any suggestions??

Has he tried the Tom Gates and Barry Loser books? I've seen year 3s to year 9s enjoying them.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 28/11/2018 21:57

Ah no I don’t think they have I will have a look. Thank you

Diary of a killer cat. It's very short but hilarious. I personally love the sarcasm.

The 13 storey treehouse series by Andy Griffiths as well as Tom Gates books

Defo the 13 storey tree house series. Laughed my head off

Ffsnosexallowed · 28/11/2018 22:00

Captain underpants

My 14 yo reluctant reader likes graphic novels - Amulet series, tintin, Asterix. Horrible Histories are quite funny

BikeRunSki · 28/11/2018 22:03

The Diary of a Wimoy Kid series
Mooneboy has my 10 year old laughing out loud.

Boatsnack3 · 28/11/2018 22:07

My dd loved the tree house series I've never seen her so engaged in a book.

She also loves Tom Gates, Max Crumblie and most David Walliams books gangsta granny, demon dentist but not billionaire boy. I'm hoping she'll like the new Max Einstein book I've bought her for Christmas too.

My son loves the Tom Gates books. He’s a reluctant reader but likes these books as there are lots of illustrations (doodles) to break up the text.

keepmoving · 28/11/2018 22:12

Another vote for Tom Gates and also David Walliams. On the advice of another thread downloaded Libby which includes free audio books so my DS who has dyslexia can read along as he listens. This allows him to read at a more engaging pace and has resulted in him wanting to read more.

WhirlwindHugs · 28/11/2018 22:15

I would avoid David Walliams. Lots of them are flipping massive. There are some short story collections like world's worst children which might be better.

Tom Gates, definitely.

Would also recommend comic books. The 14yo might like Scott pilgrim vs the world?

Have you looked at the website for Barrington Stoke? They publish books on buff paper in dyslexic friendly font etc. Google for high interest level texts for dyslexic children too.

Any book with short chapters and is funny. My kids loved Wishbone Billy. But Wilf the Worrier was also popular.

BlueChampagne · 11/12/2018 12:48

DS2 isn't the world's greatest reader but devours Asterix.

NotCitrus · 11/12/2018 17:07

Asterix, Tom Gates, Monkey Nuts, Stick Dog. Barry Loser is obsessed with farting but OK.

NotCitrus · 11/12/2018 17:08

And the Bolds - Julian Clary, about a family of hyenas who try to act human.

I recommend getting a kindle.

Big fat books don’t look so daunting on a kindle.

Also they have various fonts including a dyslexic font that may help.
