Equivalent to Rainbow Magic books for boys?

DS 7 says reading's boring, is there an equivalent to Rainbow Magic for boys? He's reading short chapter reading books at school. He's reading Father Christmas's Fake Beard at the moment, which might have got him into reading for pleasure.

He's not choosing to read them at school, at least, he's choosing to read books on his reading level, out of a selection that his teacher's chosen for him. He's reading a mixture of ORT and Big Cat at school. He can't read harder, and would be put off by longer chapters. He only really "got" reading last year.

Captain Underpants is although a good mix of writing and cartoons.
We also buy the Beano which DS (8) loves reading.

I wouldn’t suggest HP for a reluctant reader! To read to him yes but pretty advanced to read on his or her own.

also not although

rain ow magic is fine for boys.
worst witch is also great.
beast quest?

Jeremy Strong books, Captain Underpants, Dinosaur Cove were DS favourites at that age and he wasn't much of a reader. And magazines, especially Kick football and Beano.

DD's read most of Tom Gates, I think that would appeal.

redsummer DS2 wouldn't be remotely interested in fairies. He's more Power Rangers and superheroes. No offence.

The books that hooked my ds were the Bear Grylls adventure books - specifically aimed at the younger child, they were pretty good too, interesting and factual, give them a whirl - think The Book People have them as a boxed collection for a good price too

PhilomenaButterfly · 08/11/2018 20:32

I think the Bear Grylls books are a bit long. I really appreciate all the suggestions! 😊

Mr gum? They are good fun. A bit trickier than rainbow fairies and some deliberately wrong grammar but good to read together.

namechangedcausebored · 08/11/2018 21:58

Bear Grylls has different books for different ages - these are the ones I meant

Really, they’re not long at all

The Tree House Storey books? Not as many of them but entertaining and short chapters

Vintagegoth · 08/11/2018 22:15

Second the recommendation of 13 Storey Treehouse series of books. My 7 yo loved being read to but would not touch any of the reading scheme books at school. We were recommended these by a friend who has similar issues with her DS.

Dinosaur cove are probably similar level to rainbow fairies, and accessible at first chapter books sort of level. Beast quest I would say a little older interest wise for most kids? But that may just be DS, he's only got into them Y4-5, he's quite timid about anything that looks scary. I'd also put in a word for the Planet X alien adventures sets if he's at late picture books/early chapter books stage, DC have both enjoyed romping through a couple of sets of those (Book People).

Not so much a series as a few different series but Jeremy Strong has been read and reread for years, the 100 mile an hour Dog series and my dad's got an alligator series in particular. They might be a bit wordy to hook him in yet, his pirate school books are very easy though, and indoor pirates are quite approachable too.

Tom Gates goes down well too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. 😊
