Book for a 4 yo which shows that girls are just as good as boys

He keeps coming out with 'girls are weak' and "boys win more" and he's only four! God knows where he's getting it from. It certainly isn't home since I'm the one who gets on rooves to shingle them, saws the firewood and rides the motorbike.

Any recommendations for books for a 4 yo with great female models?

Following OP as I’m in the same situation. My family think it’s hilarious because I wear my feminist values on my sleeve a lot of the time and make a big effort to keep everything equal, but my son is also coming out with some unbelievable stuff about girls it being able to do certain things etc etc 🙄

Zog is quite good (Julia Donaldson), although the second one is a bit more contrived.
Rosie Revere, Engineer is also good. Cant remember who wrote it tho.

Ricekrispie22 · 01/11/2018 19:25

Like PP mentioned, Rosie Revere and also Ada Twist Scientist
The Most Magnificent Thing
Violet The Pilot
Amazing Grace
Wild by Emily Hughes
Interstellar Cinderella
Katy and the Big Snow

Goodnight stories for rebel girls. They have a range of different books now.

SeaEagleFeather · 01/11/2018 20:10

Thanks, ordered some of those. He's got a good heart really!

I like ‘Benjamin & Tulip’ - it’s very funny as well as gently subversive. The girl kicks the boy’s ass, but they end up friends.

Bob Graham has written some good stories with girls in the central role (‘A Bus Called Heaven’, ‘Let’s Get a Pup’), which might help redress the balance a bit.

Also play him or sing him ‘Everything Possible’ by Fred Small at bedtime (preferably the ).

Good a mighty girl OP as that blog often suggests books that empower girls.

Thirtyrock39 · 01/11/2018 20:51

My 6yo son loves the little people big dreams range in Waterstones about famous females in history (Rosa parks, Anne frank, coco Chanel etc)
For a fun alternative fairytale princess smarty pants is good by babette Cole

UrbaneSprawl · 01/11/2018 20:54

Good call on Princess Smartypants, ThirtyRock - doesn’t she ride a motorbike too?

Beamur · 01/11/2018 20:57

Princess Smartypants is funny too.
pippi Longstocking?

StillRunningWithScissors · 01/11/2018 22:49

Th Paperback Princess by Robert munsch.

I loved it when I was little, and my daughter does as well.

alexpolistigers · 02/11/2018 10:01

book [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sparky-Millie-Slavidou/dp/1726752062/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforum-21&qid&sr=]] has an adventurous girl heroine having fun with a dragon.

ItchySeveredFoot · 02/11/2018 10:05

The Paperbag Princess is a favourite in our house. I read it when I was little.

alexpolistigers · 02/11/2018 10:07

Not sure what I am doing wrong with the links. But anyway. Sparky, by Millie Slavidou.

JanetLovesJason · 02/11/2018 10:07

Another vote for the Paperbag Princess

movehimintothesun · 02/11/2018 10:21

I love 'He Bear, She Bear' by Stan and Jan Berenstain. It's an old one (written in the 70's) but a total classic in my opinion. (If it's still in print of course; the copy I have is from the 70's itself!)

slappinthebass · 02/11/2018 10:52

Popping Longstocking, The Night Pirates.

Minimonkeysmum · 02/11/2018 11:27

Any of the little people big dreams series - real women who did amazing things. Or rosie revere engineer/ada twist scientist - or paperbag princess.

Screaminginsidemeagain · 02/11/2018 11:35

Have a look at a mighty girl website. They have loads of great book suggestions and lots over blogs about empowering girls

SmallAndFarAway · 02/11/2018 12:23

Pippi Longstocking is great - if he says 'girls are weak' you can ask who is the strongest in the world... Also recommend switching sex when reading books with boy protagonists, girls can have short hair too, you know...

BlueChampagne · 02/11/2018 14:40

Katie Morag has a tractor-driving Granny ...

SeaEagleFeather · 02/11/2018 15:08

great, thanks!

Very interested in this. We're keen to push that girls can be anything they want.

How long are the stories in Goodnight stories for rebel girls?
