Scary stories for kids

I've been reading Harry Potter with my six-year-old and wondering where the cut-off point in the series would be (I don't think we'll venture beyond Prisoner of Azkaban for a while). But she loves scary stuff and I think it's important to let kids experiment with being scared. Any thoughts/recommendations? Great article on it here: www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/scary-stories-halloween_uk_5bd34182e4b0d38b588302c5?ncid=other_facebook_eucluwzme5k&utm_campaign=share_facebook&fbclid=IwAR3tZirVif63wi3hjltjY-HKhyHde4C5m6VMHYzw4yMVpR_qdCfrJzJQSZk

really? I would be astonished in a 6 year old could even begin to get to grips with the complexity of the plots, regardless of the scare-factor.

Yes, really - she's enjoying them so far. I'm reading with her so can recap/explain anything she doesn't understand. I guess children will take different things from the stories at different ages.

oh, absolutely. I have a friend who's DD read the lot at aged 7/8 but she reckons she actually understood less than half of what's going on - though she still enjoyed them. JK Rowling 'advanced', if you like, her plots in accordance to the age of her original readers, so they become increasingly more complex - not like, say, Wimpy Kid where every book is at exactly the same level.

I have to say that as a huge HP fan I really dislike children being given them to read too young as they simply can't fully understand or appreciate the stories so that is colouring my response!

Point taken! She was very keen to read them so I didn't want to dampen her enthusiasm to read anything. We've got the beautiful big illustrated editions of the first three (on Chamber of Secrets at the moment), which helps her. I'm hoping that she'll revisit the books again and again as she gets older. (It's not just an excuse for me to read them again at all...)
