Books to share with an 8 year old with SEN

My DS is nearly 8 years old but has severe learning disabilities. He current reading level is that of a 4 year old.
We love sharing books together at bedtime. He reads a simple phonics book to me and then we read a picture book together.
I'm looking to move on to reading him short illustrated chapter books. I'm having real difficulty finding books that are age appropriate and are engaging but have simple plots that match his level of understanding. He doesn't have the ability to understand complex language or complicated plots and we want books that are going to make us laugh.
Any suggestions? Am I asking the impossible?

Would the "Claude the dog" series appeal? Drawings are funny, it's the adventures of a dog and his best friend (a sock!)

This recent thread asked for fully illustrated books for A 6 year old, and might give you some clues.
Is his understanding at a similar level to his reading age or chronological age?

His understanding is similar to his reading reading age but he needs books that are more appropriate to his chronological age, so not too babyish. He enjoys Julia Donaldson's books so I guess I'm after longer books like these using similar language.
He attends a special needs school and I was talking to his teacher last week. She agreed that there was definitely a gap in the market for books suitable for her class of year 3s.

Scholastic do a series of books called Early Readers, which are paperbacks with lots of pictures. There are lots available, but I know there are several Horrid Henry ones where the book is just one chapter of an original HH book. Might be worth having a look.
The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark by Jill Tomlinson.
Mr Majeika books by Humphrey Carpenter.
