DS seems to like books that a part of a series. He loved Narnia, and he is really enjoying Alex Rider, but has got to book 7 of 12 and is losing a bit of interest.

He isn't a strong reader, probably about average for his age. We are past needing pictures (no not 13th storey treehouse) but doesn't like very long books as he only reads a chapter or two a day, and long books take too long to finish (eg most of the David Walliams are way too long for him to read to himself).

He finds Harry Potter too challenging, but we read the large hardback illustrated books together.

If he's a football fan my ds liked the Jamie Johnson series.

brisklady · 18/09/2018 07:13

My DS loved the Adventures of the New Cut Gang books by Phillip Pullman - he's not ready for his older series yet. If your son likes fantasy but is a sensitive sort (mine doesn't like Horrid Henry for the same reasons!), I recommend some of the more classic series like the Dark is Rising books by Susan Cooper or the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. They're less 'dark' than some of the modern books - goodies are very definitely good! - but still exciting and beautifully written.

brisklady · 18/09/2018 07:19

Ooh, and how about some classic comedy? Jennings is hilarious! Or Just William?

Miladymilord · 18/09/2018 07:26

My 8 year old has flown through the Percy Jackson books

Hmm

OP, if he likes football I can highly recommend the ultimate football heroes books. They are kid friendly biographies of players like Messi Ronaldo etc and are surprisingku well written and reluctant reader dd loved them. A lot of the players come from humble origins and they are a good introduction into different ways of life in different countries.

THAnks so much for the huge variety in your responses. Some fantastic r3commendations based on his likes and dislikes. I think we have enough to keep him going until he is 18!

Mine enjoyed the Charlie Bone series - a little bit Harry Potter-ish but more down-to-earth and with a good mix of 'special' and ordinary kids.

spiderlight · 18/09/2018 11:08

Mine also loved amazon.co.uk/Radio-Boy-Book/dp/0008183325/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1537265285&sr=1-1&keywords=radio+boy Radio Boy]] and its sequel, and keeps asking whether there will be a third.

spiderlight · 18/09/2018 11:11

Oops - link fail! Radio Boy

@piggeryporcombe

I got the title wrong . It’s The private Blog of Joe Cowley

The Hamish books by Danny Wallace.
David Baddiel kids books - not a series but still good.
If he likes fantasy my son loved The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend - she has only written one so far but the second is due soon. Magical and fun, but maybe not as dark as HP.

Fruitcake13 · 18/09/2018 11:32

The skulduggery pleasant series is brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed them myself!

BlueChampagne · 18/09/2018 11:54

Second Lemony Snicket and How to Train your Dragon.

Archie Greene books may be an alternative to Harry Potter?

VeryBerrySeptember · 18/09/2018 12:03

I find Diary of a Wimpy Kid entertaining so I wouldn't write them off.

The dog called grk series was well liked in our house; marketed as 9 plus they are about fighting crime and dictators around the globe with a cute dog.

BluebirdHill · 18/09/2018 12:11

My 9 yo has enjoyed the Radio Boy books and also the Roman Garstang Disaster series by Mark Lowery - think The Chicken Nugget Ambush is the first. Very funny. Also currently liking the Young Samurai series by Chris Bradford.

PiggeryPorcombe · 18/09/2018 13:04

@Starlight345 thanks so much for that - they look perfect for ds. He’s read all the Wimpy Kids books three times Hmm

Ordered the first one of Joe Cowley so fingers crossed.

wheresthechocolate · 18/09/2018 13:45

Another vote for the Charlie Bone series and also The Impossible Quest series and The Mapmaker Chronicles.

Doza · 19/09/2018 06:52

The Darkmouth series by Shane Hegarty is a lot of fun!

PaulMorel · 19/09/2018 07:40

My niece had his diary of a wimpy kid book series way back when he was still 10 years old. I also personally love the book because it is fun to read and you can also learn many values and lessons in life.

VeryBerrySeptember · 19/09/2018 09:09

I identify with the dad in wimpy kid. Especially when older brother (Roderick?) is in his rock band phase. Honestly, I could read it again.

Young Samurai books were enjoyed here. I called it Shogun for kids. These and the grk books all suited my kid who didn't like fantasy worlds. He also liked the Alex Rider books.

BlueChampagne · 19/09/2018 15:24

DS1 has recently enjoyed Helen Cresswell's "Ordinary Jack" and "Absolute Zero". I gather there are more ...

Witchend · 19/09/2018 15:37

A series ds enjoyed a couple of years ago was David Schutte's Naitabal series. The first is Danger! Keep out!
They're a fun set.

mariniere · 19/09/2018 15:43

defender of the realm trilogy is great!

timeisnotaline · 19/09/2018 15:59

Rowan of rin series by Emily Rodda. Paul Jennings does very funny short stories as well as books. And don’t forget Roald Dahl - James and the giant peach, danny the champion of the world.

Outnumbered99 · 26/09/2018 10:13

My sons favourite books so far have been the legend of podkin one ear and sequels- the most recent was out last week and he read it in one sitting refused to put it down!
