Child’s class teacher has set them a challenge to read a non fiction historical adventure book! Can anyone recommend any suitable for a 10 year old please?

Would the Horrible Histories books count? They are just brilliant and there are so many topics for your DC to choose from.

Lost on a mountain in Maine.

I don't know if it's available in the UK though; a friend of mine brought it over from the US for my kids.

Look at some Michael Morpurgo titles

catchingzzzeds · 24/08/2018 19:37

Sorry you said non fiction!

Knittedfairies · 24/08/2018 19:37

What about some Viking/Norse adventure?

Knittedfairies · 24/08/2018 19:38

Forgot to say - ask at your local library.

Oh!

David Livingstone - The Legendary Explorer.

It's a yellow cover with a lion on the front. I got it on Amazon. It's for ages 10 and up. My 7 year old struggled with it so I'd say the age 10 is a good age for it.

There's a lot of dual genre books out that kind of share facts through stories so are basically non fiction fiction books ( really clever!) One is My Secret War Diary...it has a Jolly Postman feel with little letters and flaps and things to read and is written from the perspective of a child as a diary. I'm a teacher and my Year 5s used it last term and they all loved it. It really is a lovely book!

It might be a tad young for him, but Ice Trap! is brilliant www.waterstones.com/book/ice-trap/meredith-hooper/m-p-robertson/9780711217447
Survivors is a good choice www.waterstones.com/book/survivors/elisabeth-navratil/9781788490573
This is a nice quick read www.waterstones.com/book/true-stories-of-escape/paul-dowswell/9781474942973

Who was Ernest Shackleton?

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2018 10:58

Diary of Anne Frank? Or is that not adventurous enough?

I think non-fiction adventure story you may find a little tricky.
There are a number of WWII books (Great escape/Reach for the Sky) that would go into that, but unless you can find an abridged one it may be a bit tough going.

If you go into fiction based on fact you have ones like the My Stories, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, that sort of one.
I wouldn't really class them as adventure though.

If you can go to adventure in a historical setting I'd recommend "Cue for Treason" by Geoffrey Trease. In fact there are a lot by him that would be in that category. There's also the "Eagle of the Ninth" set (Rosemary Sudcliffe, I think) or even some of Noel Streatfield's ones, especially those set in WWII. "Party Frock" is quite a good one for WWII info, although not really an adventure. "The Children of Primrose Lane" is an adventure, but I suspect historically not quite accurate.
The Biggles stories are also historically based.

What about Going Solo by Roald Dahl? It’s his autobiography, so it’s a true story and he writes about his adventures in Africa and in the RAF during the Second World War
