Hi all,

My boys are 5 (turned 5 last month) and 6 (will turn 7 next month) and I'm looking for book recommendations.

The 6 year old reads by himself during the day, but at night I read to them both so ideally looking for things they can both enjoy. Recently, they have loved
The time hunters series
Captain underpants series
Jack Stalwart secret agent series
The Pokemon series
Bear grylls adventure series
No Such Thing As Dragons by Philip Reeve

We have all the horrible histories and most of the Usbourne young readers books (lots of myths and legends stories, poems, space and dinosaur themes etc).

So I'm looking for recommendations of books they might like - as you can see they love adventure with humour and a little peril thrown in, along with anything that has historical sides to it. Any ideas?

Can't recommend The Bolds by Julian Clary highly enough for little boys - was the first book my 5 year old son read all by himself - and now he is nearly 7 has enjoyed the subsequent ones. Very funny, very kind and in big type but with chapters - about two hyenas who come to Teddington and act as humans, have two children and find out that there are lots of animals pretending to be human around. I enjoyed it hugely myself!

Also...when they are a bit older..

the Eragon series (about a boy and his dragon - wonderful - by Christoper Paolini);
the Skulduggery Pleasant books by Derek Landy;
and the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer, are all great.

Also The Explorer by Katharine Rundell about 4 kids lost in the Amazon.
Harry Potter is read and reread by my older children so I am sure yours will devour that when they come to it.

The one series my eldest broke his reading by himself teeth on were the (80 or so) Beast Quest books by Adam Blade - they appear to be written by a team of writers BUT for my eldest they were brilliant - a boy Tom with his wolf and his friend Elena fight beasts - same plot in 80 different books but actually, despite my sniffiness - they are really good as they get them reading.
Like all the books already on your list. I am so impressed by Usborne. Their Beowulf for kids is great, as are their history books. The DK Science books for kids are very good too.
I loved the Jack Stalwart books too. And in fact must get them out for my nearly 7 year old as he hasn't read them yet.
Happy holidays!

My 7 year old DS loves the Izzy series by Pamela Butchart. We are currently reading the new Secret Seven book - also written by Pamela Butchart and enjoying it.
I read the Magic Treehouse series to him when he was 5 and he has just discovered reading these for himself.
Recently we have also read a couple of Anne Fines - Planet Fruitcake, Bill's New Frock, Ivan the Terrible, Angel of Nitshill Road and Worst Child.
Thank you for your recommendations, we will check those out!

the 13 story tree house series my little boy has loved them. Hes 5 as well I read them to him as he can't read yet but I think he will read them himself when he is older. He really enjoys them and giggles away

"How to Train your Dragon" series should be right up their street (and fun for adults too).
