DD (8/9) - Summer reading list

Bitlost · 30/06/2018 21:19

I’m helping DD with her summer reading list and would be keen to hear your ideas and suggestions, please.

Dd is 8 (will turn 9 end of August and start year 5 in September). She is currently reading My name is Victoria by Lucy Worsley and loving it.

Before that, she was reading Just William.

Other books she’s liked recently: Ruby Redfort and The Roman Mysteries.

Any ideas for her summer reading?

Thank you.

Dd is the same age. She's recently enjoyed:
Frances Hodgson Burnett - little princess and secret garden
Noel strearfield - white boots, ballet shoes etc
Narnia
Django wexler - Forbidden Library series
Kiran larwood - ballad of podkin one-ear
Katherine Rundell - the explorer
Cathy cassidy
Jacqueline Wilson (latter two edited for appropriate themes)

Today I found her rereading the far away tree books for the umpteenth time and she keeps going back yo malory towers, St clares and secret seven too!

Lucy Worsley has another book called Eliza Rose.
Jacqueline Wilson has written lots of books set in Victorian times, and the most famous is Hetty Feather. Hetty’s adventures continue in Sapphire Battersea, Emerald Star, Diamond, Little Stars and Hetty Feather’s Christmas. JW has also written Opal Plumstead, set in WW1, and Wave Me Goodbye, set in WW2.
The Laura Marlin series and the Murder Most Unladylike series are very similar to Ruby Redfort. The Secret Seven and Adventure Island series could appeal too.
The Jennings series by Anthony Buckeridge is similar to Just William.
She might also like Tom's Midnight Garden, Letters From The Lighthouse, Carrie's War and the PK Pinkerton series.

I second Murder Most Unladylike
A Little White Horse
The Phantom Tollbooth
Heidi

Presumably she's read Harry Potter?

My 8 and 10 year olds have absolutely devoured the Warrior Cats series by Erin Hunter. There are about 6 series of 6 books each, recently rebranded as just 'Warriors' but essentially about the adventures of clans of cats in the forest.

A Series of Unfortunate Events was a big hit when DS1 was Y4-5.
Goth Girl?

What a fab list. Stealing these for DD who is also going into year 5 in September.

I second lots of those already mentioned, especially Noel Streatfeild, Frances Hodgson Burnett and Diana W-J. I remember a magical summer when we went to stay with a family friend and she had all her old childhood books on a shelf in our room - I worked my way through them all before we left! I would also suggest Elizabeth Enright (The Saturdays etc) and E Nesbit, if she hasn't already read them. Maybe Harriet the Spy? Also some Judy Bloom - not Forever obviously but Superfudge, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Otherwise Known as Sheila The Great.

Bitlost · 05/07/2018 22:44

She’s read Harriet the Spy, The Borrowers, A Little Princess,.

Currently living Chinese Cinderella.

I’m looking at all your suggestions,

We borrowed a Diana WJ from the library once but she never got into it. Must try again.

We have the the Murders Most Unladylike series and I think she’s read one.

Other books on our list:

  • Sapphire Battersea
  • Young Sherlock
  • The case of the deadly desperado
  • School for good and evil (she might be too young)
  • The latest Lauren St John
  • The latest in the Uncommoners series
  • An old edition of Nancy Drew
Alex Ryder Last one in the Mysterious Benedict Society

DD (8)’s three favourite books this year are:
The Secret of Nightingale Wood, Lucy Strange
To the River Sea, Iva Robertson
The boy at the back of the Class, Onjali Rauf (a recent book about a refugee child.)
She’s just read her first Nancy Drew in an afternoon so we will look for more. Any thoughts on new v. old editions?

Lots of great ideas on this thread!

My DD is nearly 9 and loves all the Dork Diary books.
