6 year old at awkward reading stage

My 5 year old daughter turns 6 in a few months. She's very good at reading. She's too advanced for the big picture books but not ready for the chapter books with no pictures. But she does like chapter books with colourful pictures!

She enjoys reading: Winnie and Wilbur, Horrid Henry, Isadora Moon and Rabbit and Bear. She can read these books independently.

I've just bought her the David Walliams book The World's Worst Children. She liked it but couldn't read it on her own so I read it to her.

I've got books we can read together but she wants some books that she can read on her own.

She doesn't tend to like stereotypical girly stuff and had to be persuaded to try Isadora Moon. She loved that book though.

Any recommendations?

DC Superpets
Dirty Bertie
Knight in Training
Dilly the Dinosaur

Dick King-Smith’s “Sophie” books were perfect for DD at this stage, when she was just 6.

Michael Murpurgo's Mudpuddle Farm series is good. Also The 13-Story Treehouse series.

It's a bit old fashioned but maybe Enid Blyton?

BikeRunSki · 15/06/2018 08:13

There was another thread earlier this week about the rather dated attitudes towards women and race in the Famous Five. I’d want to just check-read Enid Blyton before giving them to my dc.

Thanks everyone! I've made a list of all of your suggestions. I'll have a look at them and hopefully buy a few she might like

A trip to the library, so she can have a look at them first?

Josh Lacey's Dragonsitter series?
Katie Morag short stories?

UrbaneSprawl · 15/06/2018 22:25

Ottoline, Goth Girl and Clarice Bean all go down well here.

My 6 yr old is loving the Dogman series. He can read them himself, chapter books but lots of pictures, almost like a comic strip.

Olga da Polga books by Michael Bond

bookmum08 · 16/06/2018 10:41

Daisy books by Kes Grey are funny. Jeremy Strong has a lot of books that are funny too.

My just 6yo has read
penny dreadful.
Georges marvellous medicine
Enormous crocodile.
Project x
39 storey treehouse etc
Sophie stories
Hubble bubble
Go Mo Go

She also likes the pictures and wont entertain F5 etc for that reason even though she could read it.
I think the challenge for us is that she is young in the year if she was instead nearly 7 im sure she would be more interested.

Ive also oredered some of
I was there...
Books as they seemed interesting.

Ottoline by Chris Riddell
Tom Gates by Liz Pichon
39 story treehouse
Short stories based on the Famous Five
Little Legends by Tom Percival
Clarice Bean by Lauren Child

The Happy Families series, both my kids loved them to bridge the gap between reading picture books and reading chapter books. I caught my 7yo happily leafing through them today, in fact, when The Silver Chair got a bit scary and she needed a break. And they’re quite fun to read out loud, too.

Enjoythesilence · 26/06/2018 22:21

The Alan Ahlberg books about the Gaskitt family were enjoyed by both my DC at this age. There are a few - The Woman Who Won Things, The Man Who Wore All His Clothes and The Children Who Smelled A Rat.

My little girl just turned 7. She loves reading and she’s addicted to the Daisy and the trouble with... books. There are a variety of them and I have to say they are fun and punchy.

Michael Morpurgo! Loads to choose from. My daughter also loves captain underpants because they are a little rude.

imsorryiasked · 05/07/2018 06:16

Have a look on eBay for "early readers" - there are usually bundles listed for not betty much and that way you'd get a selection of authors.

The rainbow fairies

It's literally the same story over and over

But there are hundreds of them!

Rainbow Magic is the first one

£30 for 52 books

Go to your public library if you can, and browse with her.
I'd recommend trying The xx Storey Treehouse series- a little fun and crazy, with lots of illustrations. There are also some Roald Dahl editions in a larger format with more colour illustrations.. but maybe they'd be better in a year or two. When I was a primary school librarian, loads of girls loved those (hideous) Rainbow Fairies books. The series is terribly formulaic but lots of girls loved the formula and would read one after another. I just want kids to read and enjoy reading- it doesn't have to be worthy literature!
Just browse at the library- there'll be loads of choice.
