Short ones that give the general story. I can only find long ones or terrible ones.

The usborne ones are great- we have the Norse one, and a Greek one. There's also a set of (?12, ?20) shortish ones by Tony Ross and Geraldine McCaughrean which are v good.
Marcia Williams does fabulous illustrated comic strips of Greek myths, Roman myths, Egyptian myths etc.
The Book People are a great source of all these, they usually have v good prices.

Second the usbourne ones, my girls love them.

Lots of short versions of Aesop's fables around, you can even get them as little cards with a short story per card.

Doring Kindersley have a big book of Mythical Beasts and Magical Monsters. Most subjects and stories are covered in either 2 or 4 pages.

Me and 11yr old DS have enjoyed reading about the Greek and Norse Gods.

Seconding Marcia Williams. Also the Ladybird editions.

DD has D'aulaires Greek and norse myths. the illustrations are great

Philip Pullman has written a great book of fairy tales (though possibly not quite what you are after).

Neil Gaimans Norse Mythology is good too, my DC enjoyed listening to that in audio book form.

I second Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. My DS read this book when he was 11 and loved it.

For something slightly different, I loved a particular book of West Indian folk tales as a kid — all about Anansi the spider. Pretty sure it’s this one as I remember the tree:

There's a Michael Morpurgo version of Aesop's Fables which DS liked.
www.amazon.co.uk/Atticus-Storyteller-100-Stories-Greece/dp/1842552791?tag=mumsnetforum-21 is also good recommended age 9+

Any particular mythology? Greek, Egyptian, Norse, ...

For Greek, DS rates 'D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths' and has recently acquired the hefty 'Usborne Book of Greek Myths' and is well into that now.

Both are actual re-tellings of the stories, rather than synopsies of the stories. If you are more after synopsies/general overview, then books with 'mythology' in the title rather than 'myths' are more likely to be what you're looking for. DK Eyewitness aren't bad, and I believe Usborne does some too. And sometimes books about ancient Greece (that cover much more than just mythology) have good sections on mythology, perhaps what you're looking for? E.g. I held Encyclopedia of ancient Greece in my hands just a few days ago, looks really good.

Another vote for Neil Gaiman's rendition of the Norse mythology. I'm reading it at the moment and the language and tone would definitely suit an older child/teen.
