Where I’m also his godmother, highly intelligent but needs to get the reading bug. Doesn’t much enjoy Horrible History, Horrid Henry now too easy save to read with his cousin ( see allied thread). Sense of humour, I’ve given him joke books.

In my view, he now needs chapter books with a strong sense of plot, to which he can relate. Traditional white middle class adventures in the countryside (Narnia, Swallows and Amazons, The Dark is Rising) prob have too few things to relate to at the moment although in due course they doubtless will. A series would be good.

Views, help, please..

DS2 (8) is reading The Polar Bear Explorers Club at the moment and he loves it. He thinks it’s funny and loves everything about it. Apparently it’s his favourite book ever.

How to train your dragon is also excellent. So is the Wizards of Once (by the same author).

My 8 yr old ds loved the Borgen the Axe Boy series, they were the first books that had him asking if he could read a bit longer at bedtime

Harry Potter - my 9yr old DD is obsessed! The 13 Story Treehouse series - DD not so keen but think they would appeal to boys more.

What’s Tom Gates about?

I’ve seen the How to train your dragon but never read them.

Any suggestions about what he might read to his 4 1/2 old cousin, too?

Tom gates is about an American schoolboy who likes to doodle in class. DS2 really likes Tom gates books.

I teach 9/10 yr olds and they love:

The Stormbreaker series
Goodnight Mister Tom
Percy Jackson series
Harry Potter series
David Walliams
Wonder

Fluffybat, how do they react to the dreadful scenes of the baby’s death and the weird psychiatrist in GMT? I would have had the screaming abdabs and perpetual nightmares at that age.
