Books like wimpy kid

NeonLover · 20/02/2018 10:30

My son has really enjoyed the diary of a wimpy kid novels. I'm looking for some more books like this but preferably not as American- there are lists of similar books on the internet but none of them are in the UK.

Can anyone recommend any similar page turners for him?

Thanks

Tom gates books?

VileyRose · 20/02/2018 10:31

Tom gates
Captain underpants

Notmybag · 20/02/2018 10:32

Mine have LOVED the "Tom Gates" books which I think are a similar style by Liz Pichon.
I often find them in charity shops. There are lots in the series.

Notmybag · 20/02/2018 10:32

x-post clearly!!

Arapaima · 20/02/2018 10:32

Horrid Henry

NeonLover · 20/02/2018 10:34

Had forgotten about Tom gates- thank you! Will try and get some from the library.

He liked horrid Henry too but read most of those last year.

Any other suggestions?

My dd loved wimpy kid and is now on dork diaries. It's about a girl, but she loved wimpy and it's about a boy so.... Ds1(12) also loves wimpy but but not got into Tom Gates. Maybe I should try again. I'm at a loss with him. My other 9yo got v into David Walliams when he was 8 but Wimpy kid never got his attention.

MerryMarigold · 20/02/2018 10:45

Wimpy Kid is real, insightful and emotional without being too silly. I think that's what a lot of kids (esp older) love about it.

AuntyElle · 20/02/2018 11:02

Danny Wallace’s Hamish series went down well here.

BasaForDinner · 20/02/2018 11:24

My 8 yo loves Wimpy Kid and David Walliams (especially on audio), but hasn't got into Tom Gates.

NeonLover · 20/02/2018 12:13

Will check out dork diaries then although but wary of all the American vocab!

Hamish books also look good and doctor proctor looks promising.

Thanks Smile

Also the 13-storey treehouse series

MerryMarigold · 20/02/2018 18:54

Yes, dork is pretty American, but I think dd is more influenced by The Next Step and Preston Playz.

MerryMarigold · 20/02/2018 18:54

Arapaima. What is that?

BevBrook · 20/02/2018 18:57

Danger is Everywhere has a UK author I think
There is also Timmy Failure but that’s American.

iloveredwine · 20/02/2018 19:05

middle school books by James Patterson go down well here

NeonLover · 20/02/2018 22:15

Yes would recommend the treehouse series. He read them all last year and they were the first books he wanted to stay up and keep the light on for!

He's seven and is an able reader but I'm wary of giving him books aimed at older kids.
