I have two young children who love books but I feel our collection is becoming a bit stagnant. They love Shirley Hughes, Julia Donaldson, Oliver Jeffers, Judith Kerr, Janet & Allen Ahlberg etc. Have you any recommendations for a few new additions for Christmas presents? Thanks!

I like the Ten Little... books by Mike Brownlow. Ten little pirates/dinosaurs/princesses etc. Lovely rhyming and good for counting too!

Oh and Jonny Duddle - Gigantosaurus, The Pirates Next Door, The Pirate Cruncher and the King of Space. Fantastically well drawn.

Non fiction? A good children’s enclopydia (sp?) is always a good buy. We read a few pages on each topic like space or dinosaurs in between fiction books. Kids love to learn about their world as well as good stories.

Mine love the Ella Bella books too.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 28/11/2017 19:51

Oi cat/dog/frog are popular in our house although I think it might be because they like hearing me mess up the rhyming.

With my boy I loved going back to some of the books I had growing up in the States. ‘Ox Cart Man’ by Donald Hall is a simple story set in 19th Century New England, with beautiful, naive-style illustrations. ‘The Midnight Farm’ by Reeve Lindbergh is a bedtime/counting book that’s out of print, but available secondhand via AbeBooks and the like.

Virginia Lee Burton (‘The Little House’) and Robert McCloskey (‘Blueberries for Sal’) are two more US author/illustrators worth checking out.

As for more modern picture books, Jackie Morris’s illustrations are stunning, though some of the stories might be a little old just yet.

I also love Innosanto Nagara’s ‘Counting on Community’ and ‘A is for Activist’, but the strong social justice theme of the latter in particular means these won’t match everyone’s value system!

there’s a picture book of ‘what a wonderful world’ too - a lovely book to read

Thanks so much for the replies. Lots to explore and loads of authors I haven't heard of. Also, good shout re an encyclopaedia. My eldest has started nursery school this year and I can see his world expanding all the time.
