Is it worth reading new children's books or should we choose classics only?

I was wondering what other parents think about this when choosing books for our young children.

Should we try to limit them to 'classics' only. It means mostly books that were published a long time ago and are generally considered 'being good'.

Is it a good way to educate our children?

Just read all the books.

And use your local library to dip in and try them for free.

No to limiting choice ! A breadth of reading matter is the best way forward and you will help expand your DC's vocabulary if some classics are in the mix.

Agree that audio books are a good way to access the classics. DS would never have read Treasure Island but the BBC production version is very atmospheric. He is currently reading Jennings and enjoying that but maybe that's not a classic for most people.
