Football School is an innovative series from two bestselling writers that teaches children about the world through football - and reading!

The books are packed with awesome true stories, real science and fascinating facts and tonnes of humour. When do footballers poo? Can you play football on Mars? What is a magic sponge? You’ll find the answers to these questions and more on subjects from history and geography to biology and maths. Illustrated throughout with hilarious cartoons and filled with laugh-out-loud gags, this is the perfect book for any boy or girl who loves football.

The coaches at Football School, Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton, are journalists, broadcasters and award-winning science and sports writers. They believe that there’s nothing you can’t learn through the prism of football, and their knowledge, enthusiasm and engaging writing make them the perfect team to teach kids how to score with their heads!

To celebrate the second book in the series, we're giving away a fantastic football-themed prize bundle - including Football School Season 1 and 2 and personalised items including a football from We Print Balls, a tabletop football game from Auntie Mims, and football wall stickers from Bright Blue Pig.

As the series is a great way to get the more reluctant of readers interested in books, for your chance to win the prize bundle worth £100, just tell us - what book(s) got your kids into reading, and why?

My son enjoys reading and football and yet lacks confidence in both! He doesn't like making mistakes so we are working on building resilience in both areas - so this would be an ideal combination for us!

Narnianescape · 23/11/2017 15:48

The Midnight Gang really got my 6 year old into reading

asuwere · 23/11/2017 16:00

DS1 is a very reluctant reader but he got a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and loved it (think the pictures and big font helped!) He went to the library to get more and even saved up to buy the latest one at the time!

mummykate87 · 23/11/2017 16:16

The 'That's Not My...' books have been brilliantly encouraging for my daughter! She loves her book collection now.

tia3456 · 23/11/2017 16:22

For my son it was the Anthony Browne books, he absolutely loved the illustrations and got totally absorbed into the books, they also reminded myself of 80s childhood with the pics, so could relate to them as well, so we both enjoyed the books

ren999 · 23/11/2017 16:26

The book that got my son into reading (and I can't stop him now!) was The Enchanted Forest by Enid Blyton. He loved the characters like Moonface and The Saucepan Man!!

janney3 · 23/11/2017 16:26

Diary of a Wimpy Kid books here too. I found them rather tedious but my son loved them and has continued to love reading.

PseudoBadger · 23/11/2017 16:37

DS started to enjoy reading when we found Frankie’s Magic Football.

MaroonPencil · 23/11/2017 16:51

Harry Potter for DS1 - he could read before he went to school but had no interest in doing so, although he liked being read to. I wouldn't read him past book number three for HP though, said he would have to do it himself if he wanted to, and he did. Now he reads all kinds of things.

DS2 has only in the last few weeks got into reading for pleasure and it is so lovely to see. For him it was Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Whitelisbon · 23/11/2017 16:55

My dyslexic son got into reading by battling his way through the entire Harry potter series. I told him he couldn't watch the films until he'd read the corresponding books.
It took him 9 months to read them all, but he finished a week before his 9th birthday, and he was so proud of himself. He's read almost continuously since, and is one of the most regular library visitors in our village.

YesThisIsMe · 23/11/2017 17:02

DS has never been much of one for stories but he read all the Horrible Science/Horrible History books from cover to cover.

DD was obsessed with Percy Jackson when she was in primary school. She still treasures her Camp Half-Blood T shirt.

thanksamillion · 23/11/2017 17:09

Tom Gates for DS and Rainbow Magic for the girls. DS also read a lot of football related books.

towser44 · 23/11/2017 17:40

We bought the DD the Roald Dahl series and she can't put them down! It was Roald Dahl (specifically Danny the Champion of The World) which got me hooked on books!

QuiltingFlower · 23/11/2017 17:41

Comics and picture story books for older readers! Doesn't matter what they read, doesn't matter that there may be more pictures than words, sit with your child and look at the pictures and read. Take the pressure off. Comics and comic books are not like school reading schemes.

Boys in particular often seem to enjoy non fiction so find a magazine / comic connected with their hobby and enjoy. My son's breakthrough came from a comic book edition of The Hobbit.

Tidypidy · 23/11/2017 18:26

All the Shirley Hughes books especially Dogger.

Sillysausage123 · 23/11/2017 18:38

I wish more graphic novels were aimed at younger children instead of just aimed at teenagers as it was graphic novels that got my son finally into reading.
The graphic novels were Adventure time and Regular Show and I highly recommend for younger children

Elizasmum02 · 23/11/2017 18:47

the famous five series. i tried for years to read betime storiis and encourage my daughter to read however she just hated it! after finally reading the first in the seriess she couldnt stop and now read at leat two books a week, shes 16 now!

SSCRASE123 · 23/11/2017 18:51

The Jamie Johnson & Frankies Magic Football series are my lads favourites but happily he is now really getting into Roadl Dahl, David Walliams & David Baddiel which are great to read together.

mo3733 · 23/11/2017 18:54

the hobbit because its so escaping and appeals to a young mind

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 23/11/2017 18:58

Ds is just 3, but started with picture books and built from there. We have a huge selection but his favourites are always the ones he knows off by heart. For the past few months it’s been peppa pig books on repeat Sad

Halebeke425 · 23/11/2017 19:45

Jacqueline Wilson and the Percy Jackson series got my dd hooked on books now she's a reading machine! I'm still working on getting ds into reading, got him the captain underpants books for Xmas but this prize would be a great help

Thesqueezermustghost · 23/11/2017 19:55

Hate to say it but Tom Gates and also the Wimpy Kid.

emmav6 · 23/11/2017 20:24

my son loved the tom/matt oldfield series which was mini biographies of his hero footballers. He loved learning more about their lives

ponygirlcurtis · 23/11/2017 20:54

Harry Potter all the way. DS is an avid reader now, and Harry Potter was the first book that set a light under him. He went through them like a hot knife through butter, and years later he still returns to them for comfort.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 23/11/2017 21:11

Both my DC love books - which makes me very happy!
Particular favs are any by Julia Donaldson especially The Gruffalo and Stick Man.
I'm hoping they keep up their love of reading.
