Hi, can anyone recommend any good books for my nearly 12 yo DD?? She has read and loved all the Harry Potters and Lauren St John and we are looking for some new ideas. If she has a good book, she doesn't attempt to go on devices all the time! I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions with her birthday and Christmas coming up - thank you!!!

Oh, yes, also
Skulduggery Pleasant
Hunger Games
Tiffany Aching books
We've watched the series of Unfortunate Events but she didn't fancy reading them, she didn't like the Ruby Red fort books but quite a few of her friends have read both of these.

If you can go online to Abe books or similar Jacqueline Wilson, back in the 80s wrote some awesome teenage books. Way better standard even than her current ones and for older readers. Or for JW's more recent, try the Girls series (Girls in Love/Under Pressure/Out late etc).

Things I recommend (some may be out of print but that is where ebay, Abe books etc come in handy):

Summer of my German Soldier- Bette Greene
The Big Pink- Ann Pilling
Many Rivers To Cross- Lynne Reid Banks

Anything by Rosa Guy, Jean Ure. Jane Austen

When my daughter was that age she liked The Ladies Detective Agency and Wodehouse. My son loved Jerome K Jerome and Mark Twain.

My youngest is 16 and loves Jojo Moyes.

I love the Emily books, I think they were also by Lucy more than Montgomery, but I prefer them to the end of Green Gables series. Emily of new moon, and other books.

Has she read number the stars, wonder, fish in a tree? All of those are very good. Some might be good for youngEr readers but I think she would like them.

When I was 12 I loved:
Cue for treason - Geoffrey trease (oldie but a goodie, Tudor mystery, strong female character)
Cold comfort farm - Stella gibbons (very funny, again smart female protagonist)
I capture the castle - dodie Smith (my all time favourite - very funny and moving and romantic with a great, witty 17 year old female narrator)

If you are on Facebook, look for A Mighty Girl and like the page.
They often recommend stories (both biographical and fictional - it is the biographies that interest me - some stunning, hidden stories out there). The stories are of strong, independent, capable women. Spies during the war, scientists, mathematicians, black activists, equal rights campaigners of all sorts. Heroines of all sorts.

If you can go online to Abe books or similar Jacqueline Wilson, back in the 80s wrote some awesome teenage books. I don't recommend those without checking thoroughly beforehand. Dd2 found one in a charity shop which was portrayed as a romance-between a pupil and the teacher.

Marianne Dreams - blurred lines between fantasy and reality
Voyage by Adele Geras
Alan Garner (Brisingamen and The Owl Service) - very spooky and cracking good reads
The Harriet books

Hi all. I'm not sure if this is allowed so please delete if not!

I have actually written a book which sounds perfect! Viola Pumpernickel and the Emerald Lady is set in Victorian London and tells the story of a 12 year old detective. It's been getting really good reviews and is available here: www.goo.gl/Tnf5pr - or by searching for Viola Pumpernickel on Amazon if you don't like clicking on random links!

Bestselling authors Peter James, Paige Toon and Amy Lloyd have all championed the book - which I am still completely shocked about! It was also made Book of the Week at Windlesham House School.

It would be really lovely to have your support! I know I'm not a famous author but we all have to start somewhere!

Thanks in advance!

I agree about the Murder Most Unladylike series - my dd can't put them down at the minute.

Rooftoppers is a wonderful story about a girl who runsaway to paris to look for her mother. We loved it.

the book thief is amazing as is little women/good wives, the diary of anne frank, the catcher in the rye. jacqueline wilson and michael morpurgo keep bringing out new books that are great. the secret garden and bridge to terebithia books are great too. a series of unfortunate events, the land of stories and percy jackson too. the chronicles of narnia and peter pan are also fab. the perks of being a wallflower, the fault in our stars and before i fall are great teen books that a lot of younger kids like too.

My daughters LOVED "The War that Saved My Life" and "The War I finally Won" by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. We read them when they came out and many, many books later they are still their favourites.

Other ones they have liked were:

  • Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper
  • Counting by 7s
  • The Breadwinner series by D Ellis
  • The Parent Trap by Erich Kastner
  • A Sea of Stars by Kate Maryon

Rumer Godden's "Greengage Summer"

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/06/2018 11:36

The Noel Streatfield books - Ballet Shoes et al.

Definitely Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books (the 'gateway drug' books to the whole Discworld canon).

L M Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, and its sequels.

The Chalet School series, by Elinor M Brent-Dyer.

When she's a bit older, the Dragons of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey (some of the themes are a bit 'adult' for a 12 year old).

Elizabeth Goudge - The Dean's Watch, Linnets and Valerians, The Torminster trilogy, the Elliots of Damerosehay trilogy.

hellokittymania · 27/06/2018 11:44

I just looked at glitter series, I think I'd like to read that.
