The same modern books come up as favourites for the modern childhood I want to hear about books that are probably out of print but well loved. Mine are

Trebizon series
The tree that sat down
Heidi
Turpenny Feefo and jinks

Witchend, we have a lot of the same stuff in our heads.

Anyone else love Noel Streatfeild's Painted Garden? That's my favourite of hers.

The tree that sat down

Do you know, I LOVED that book..but never met anyone else who has read it! Also remember that there was "The stream that stood still" and I think maybe another one?

You've made my day!

Toofle: I made one of my dolls a yellow outfit like Jane gets from Aunt Cora.

I think what I liked about it was Jane got to be important without actually changing her moodiness. Often books that start with the bad-tempered one getting their wish end up with them being a plaster-saint at the end. Jane is still Jane, although you can also see that she's been helped by being the important one for a while.
