DS isn't a voracious reader, unless it's anything to do with minecraft in which case he's all over it, but he enjoys me still reading to him at bedtime. We've done all the Roald Dahl and David Walliams books, we did Philosopher's Stone but halfway through Chamber of Secrets and he says it's too scary for me to read to him just before bed.

What are you reading your children? I want to read him books above his reading level but not sure what to tackle next - he does love Harry Potter so we'll carry that on in the daytime! I've tried Wind in the Willows, Narnia and various other "classics" but they've been a lot harder going than I remember. Any modern classics I should know about - I read a million books a day at his age and throughout school so I don't know why I'm struggling so much!

DS2 is reading the chronicles of ancient darkness series on his own but I am currently reading Shadow Forest to him by Matt Haig. It's linked to his christmas series recommended by pps above which we also love.

Varjak Paw (two in the series), by S F Said, story of a cat, mixes mysticism, some eastern philosophy, and a great story do adventure.
Loved reading these to my daughter and remain one of my favourite books for this age range.

Try the Charlie Bone series - a little bit Harry Potter but not as dark.

Just checking back to say my 10yr DD and I really enjoyed reading the two Matt Haig books The girl who save Christmas and the boy called Christmas. Thanks to this thread. I’m also reading (myself) Matts “How to stop time” book, which is great.

My DS 9, loves reading the story tree house books to him self over and over! Also enjoyed bad dad by David Walliams and the creakers. They also listen s lot to audible with DD 11. They have listened to lots of longer books and books above there reading age.
