Best book you've read to your 6/7 year old?

Ok, feel like a bit of a cheat here - I'm a teacher & have just moved into Y2 (from Y6!!)

I'd love to hear what books really gripped your Y2 aged child. I think my lovely lot still enjoy a good picture book but are prob ready for a good chapter book. However, I'm not sure where to pitch it - don't want anything too babyish but something that they will all enjoy listening to.

Already got stacks of Dahl. Mr Gum? Or is that a bit old? Any good ideas?

My son loves the treehouse series and I'm going to take them into school this year to read to 7yr olds.

This is the first book

I reckon they are the perfect age for Dahl and Mr Gum. Anything a bit silly goes down well, but not too silly!

Hamish books by Danny Wallace are great, although quite a lot of illustrations which might be hard as a class book. I'd say Roald (like Twits, or George's marvellous medicine) would be good too.

Enchanted Wood and Faraway Tree, Charlotte's Web, George's Marvellous Medicine or any Roald Dahl, David Walliams, Princess Polly to the Rescue, Olga de Polga...

Is this light reading or is it supposed to be something a bit more serious? DD (about to go into Yr3) loves the Daisy books & those by Pamela Butchart. Most of the latter are ridiculous, fast moving stories set in a school & would appeal to both girls & boys.

Definitely the Enchanted Wood and the Faraway Tree. I can also recall reading Wind in the Willows with my daughter at that age too.

My ds has just moved into year 2. We read The Iron Man last week and he really loved it.

My 7yo (who has started Y3 today) is gripped by these books: adventuresofalgy.com/. He also loves Beasts of Olympus.

The Pamela Butchart books are brilliant! They are enjoyable to read( once you get used to the conversational style) and very funny. My dd2 has just gone into year 2 and loves them.

When my daughter was in Y2 I read The Princess Bride - William Goldman to her (omitting the bits in italics). She absolutely loved it and it has become her favourite book which she reads and re-reads constantly including the parody italics.

One might consider it a bit old but it is full of adventure and very funny. Common Sense media says 10+ but I tend to find their ratings extremely conservative.

The Sophie books by Dick King Smith were a massive hit in our house. In fact anything by Dick King Smith.

missyB1 · 06/09/2017 13:58

Agree with the Dick King Smith "Sophie" books and the Kes Gray "Daisy" books. Also yes to the Faraway Tree books - although is Enid Blyton allowed in schools these days? My ds also loved Charlotte's web when he was that age.
