Hello trying to build a list of books for my nearly 7 year old to read independently based on stories I remember that I genuinely enjoyed reading as a child. So far I have the worst witch series and gobilino the witches cat. Anyone have any further suggestions?

But I've found that with the offer books especially, what I was able to read independently tend to be a book that is better if I read to my DC as the extra generation of makes a big difference and they need more explanations of context and some of the words.

The ones that have lasted best from that list with my children are The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark and, the Faraway Tree books, Roald Dahl and, surprisingly, the Little House on the Prairie.

Modern writers to add to the list (apart from the obvious JK Rowling) would be Reeves and McIntyre, Chris Riddell, Kate Saunders and Tamora Pierce.

Frog and Toad stories by Arnold Lobel are lovely.

The book that's always stayed with me is Charlotte Sometimes - so much so that I had to buy myself a copy recently. It's haunting and just lovely.

The Ghost of Thomas Kempe by Penelope Lively and the Just Lisa books by Hans Peterson were my favourites, along with the Enid Blyton, Arthur Ransome and Ruby Ferguson books already mentioned.

Whoever said Ramona - I love you. I had completely forgotten those books and how much I loved them. My all time favourite though was The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. No idea why but I can remember every word and still have a very battered copy of it in my children's bookcase.
