Non-rhyming book recommendations

My DD (4.5yrs) has mild developmental delay and a speech & language disorder, part of which includes difficulty processing language.

I have found that, probably as a result of this, she's not interested in books that rhyme e.g. Julia Donaldson as she just can't take them in. She also struggles with books that are based on very far fetched concepts.

I've struggled to try and find books to catch her interest - she currently enjoys the Maisy books, Peppa stories, Meg and Mog and has grown out of the Pip and Posy books.

Please can anyone recommend some others along these lines that we might enjoy?

Books by Shirley Hughes
Miss Brick the Builders Baby from the happy families series by Ahlberg
Elmer the Elephant
Russell the Sheep

Might she like the Mog books by Judith Kerr? I know they're old, but they're lovely everyday stories. (Just don't ever buy Goodbye Mog . . .)

Kipper the dog
Tom and Pippo
Even though she doesn't like rhymes I would also try Dr Seuss's "the cat in the hat" as it has very simple concrete concepts

Martin Waddell - Owl Babies, the little bear books

Jill Murphy - Peace at Last, Five Minutes Peace, A Piece of Cake

Apple tree yard books - the ones about the farm

Dogger - Shirley Hughes

Dora's Eggs /Dora's Chicks - Julie Skye's

Titch - Pat Hutchins

One Rainy Day/ One Winter's Day /One Snowy Night - Christina Butler

Topsy and Tim

Oliver Jeffers has some brilliant books, but might fall under the too far fetched category, likewise Anthony Browne

Handa's Surprise - Eileen Browne - a classic!

Agree with The Mog and Kipper suggestions, I got a 10 pack of each from the book people for £10 each.

Mog
Kipper
Mr Men/Little Miss

I normally suggest the Hairy MacClary books but they rhyme!

That Pesky Dragon by Julie Sykes. I didn't think the story was particularly amazing but my DS loves it.

What about books of series/films your DD likes? I don't think the stories are that great but my DS will read anything with characters he already loves in.

Can I recommend Naughty Bus. Less well known but my DC adored it. (I promise I'm not the author in disguise).

But do find some time to visit your nearest library for an hour or so and just spend time together on the floor cushions trying all the different picture books to see what takes her fancy. At that age you could spend a fortune on books trying to find the ones that work. Failing that, a really large and understanding bookshop where you can browse at length with her before picking a couple.

The Topsy and Tim books are nice, just bought 'The New Baby' for my DS who is nearly 3 and it's a bit old for him, so might suit your DD. There's a big selection and they're all really practical real life sort of situations.

Is she old enough Katie Morag books?

SomewhereOver · 02/07/2017 11:12

Thanks so much for all these suggestions! Agree about the library too, we haven't been in ages so will pop down next week.
