History books for 11 year old (please!)

My niece is history mad, in particular the Early Modernist period but the books available seem to be either a little too young or a little old.

She was just reading an Alison Weir book and she kept having to re-read sentences or ask the meaning of words.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. I did speak to local librarian but unfortunately he didn't really 'get' what I was saying!

Cynthia Hartnett wrote rather good, well researched historical fiction but much of it is out of print - I'd recommend The Wool-Pack and A Load of Unicorn.

I read A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel when I was 12 but you'd have to judge her reading age, I just picked it off my parents' shelf

My daughter is nine, has a high reading age but is very wary of scary books. She enjoys the History House book series, loves Lucy Worsley's Courtiers and her fiction - one is a Tudor story and the other about Victoria. She has a fiction book for older readers too but I haven't given it to my daughter as it might be too grown-up in topic for her yet. She likes the My Story books, especially the Tudor ones, but she says they might be a little young for an eleven-year-old. The Inquisitor's Tale by Adam Gidwitz is amazing but she found it too scary. If you search online or look on Pinterest on What Do We Do All Day or Imagination Soup they often have lists of history books by age-group.

Thank you very much.

I should have said she already likes Lucy Worsley but never thought about Hilary Mantel even though I was just talking to my niece about her comments on R4 so I really should have twigged! Now I'm thinking possibly Suzannah Lipscomb?

I'll have a look on Pinterest and Imagination Soup.

Thank you very much!

I'd choose Philipa Gregory over Alison Weir.

Enb76 · 13/06/2017 17:54

Also, she's a good age for The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Alison Weir was my fault because I love her myself. I'm sure she has a Phillipa Gregory but I'm wondering if it's Antonia Fraser now- it's blue Grin I'll investigate her bookcase tomorrow.

Thanks again, I'd hit a wall for some reason but now I'm on the case!

Oh and yes I hadn't thought of The Scarlett Pimpernel either and I'm certain she will love it.

It's later in the period, but she might like Children of the New Forest?

Also, Margaret Irwin's trilogy on Princess Elizabeth I is v.good.

I'm not sure she'd like Children of the New Forest and this birthday she really wants Early Modernism books but I'm going to creep The Scarlett Pimpernel in Grin
