DD (8) is about to finish the Harry Potter series and be bereft- what next?

The bug bit her in February, having been a keen but not avid reader before then. Now she's about to finish the seventh and I think she'll be bereft. She says she'll just start reading them all again (although has conceded to giving War Horse a try), which is frankly lame. What can we suggest to her next? She's eyeing up my Skellig, but as I only read it last month, I'd like to think it is a bit too sophisticated for her (?!)

After HP, DS (and me!) enjoyed
Artemis Fowl
The Thief Lord
Series of Unfortunate Events

The 'Molly Moon' books are good, too.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy.

Please don't buy Darren Shan at 8!

I was introduced to Elizabeth Enright about age 8 - the Melendy series, starting with the Saturdays. Not sure if they'really still in print though.

Great thread all. My 9 year old just coming to the end of the last harry potter too, so just what we need.

Thanks Ebearhug, I read that when I was young and was trying to remember what it was called for years!

Also looking for book about a girl who cycles round the isle of Wight...?

A wizard of Earthsea, and the rest of the trilogy by Ursula La Guin,
Any of Tamora Pierce's books
Some of Mercedes Lackey's Valdamar stories.
All worth a read

I loved the Wind on Fire trilogy when I was her age, but from a now outside perspective they may be a bit old?

Look them up though and see what you think, they really are great.

Oh and yes yes to pp's suggesting Artemis Fowl... may need to reread those and the Chrestomanci series again myself.

Hi me and my niece have both just finished 'The Secret in the Sky' by Willow Lockett. Its about a 13-year-old girl called Ruby Merrygold, who lives with her wicked Aunt Mabel and finds a magical telescope in her garden. When she looks through it she discovers the secret in the sky, where all the Superfolk live that look after everyone on earth. There's Walter Wishbone, the wish granter, Malbert Moonberg, the dream maker and all the fairy-tale characters have all grown up and achieved their dreams, including Peter Pan who now owns his own theme park up there. Ruby is delighted when she is invited up to it to make her dreams come true, by Harrison Hawk. BUT there's just one person stopping her from getting there, her wicked Aunt Mabel.
Will she make it up to the most magical and best kept secret in the world? and if she does, a creepy forest awaits those who enter the sky with fear, does Ruby have fears?
If this sounds like something you're daughter will enjoy, it is available on Amazon and this is the first in a series which I was delighted to find out. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm 27! Hehe. Hope you find some great books for him either way and have a wonderful summer!
Daisy.

I haven't let mine have beyond the 4th book yet(they are 8 and 9) partly because I am uncertain they are ready for them and partly to avoid this "what now" situation. You could try Moondial, Charlotte Sometimes, A Traveller Through Time, Children of Greene Know type books? Have you done The Enchanted Castle, 5 Children and it, Phoenix and the Carpet etc?
