What age to read Wonder by R J Palacio?

My year 4 daughter and her year 5 friend are currently reading this book as it was recommended by an assistant in our local bookshop. Another mum has said she did not think it was appropriate for this age group. Please can someone who has read this book let me know which age group they think this is aimed at? Thanks.

Sorry, what age is year 4/5?

I read it a few years ago. I think 8ish would be ok from what I remember.

I teach 10 - 14 year olds & we recommend it for them. Several have read it before, around the age of 8 - 9.

summerdaysgain · 21/04/2017 20:27

It is age 9 (year 4 is age 8/9) and age 10 (year 5 is age 9/10).

I am a volunteer school librarian (so no training!) but I read the book over the Easter holiday and will recommend it for Years 5 and 6. Would also, imo, make a great class reader for those years.

Have just ordered it for DS1 who is a young Y5 (10 in August).

Emmah75 · 27/04/2017 19:28

My son just read it, he's 10, and I have just started it! Would let my dd read it next, she's 8.

It's a great book. My very sensitive 9YO was absolutely fine with it, so I'd have no problems recommending it for 8+.

kitbabingley · 27/04/2017 19:34

My son read it at 11. He loved it and so did I.

womblemum · 27/04/2017 22:30

My daughter finished it today. She is 8 (year 4) and loved it. My son read it when he was in year 3 and felt the same.

teaandakitkat · 27/04/2017 22:33

We read it last summer when my son's were 8 and 10. They were not upset by it. They didn't really even have any difficult questions. But they did enjoy it and find it interesting.

cowgirlsareforever · 27/04/2017 22:34

It's a fantastic book. DS2 read it aged 9 or 10.

Longdistance · 27/04/2017 22:35

I have this book having read it. Yes to about year 4. My dd is year 2 now, and iirc there was some swearing (?) in it, could be wrong though, as read it a while ago.

ExplodedCloud · 27/04/2017 22:42

Dd read it in Y4 but her school read it in Y5

TanteJeanne · 01/05/2017 17:10

Primary school librarian here. I would recommend it year 6 onwards. Not saying younger children wouldnt enjoy but my DC2 is Yr 5 and I think he would get more from it when he's slightly more mature.
An absolutely fabulous life changing book- makes you think about what kind of a person you want to be.

iseenodust · 01/05/2017 19:26

DS has done it in school this year - yr8.

Monkeyface26 · 01/05/2017 19:32

It is a wonderful book. Dd1 read it aged 12. Dd2 read it aged 10 and still says it is the best book she has ever read. It was shortlisted for the Carnegie medal (the most prestigious children's book prize). I don't think it is unsuitable for an 8 yr old but a slightly older child would perhaps get more out of it.

Leeds2 · 01/05/2017 19:52

In case it is of interest, I saw on the Book People's website today an advert for a follow up Wonder book, containing chapters by the bully, Augie's sister etc. Sorry, I can't remember what it is called, but think Wonder was in the title!

ShowOfHands · 01/05/2017 19:56

9yo dd read it a while ago. I think year 4 onwards is fine.

NorksAkimbo72 · 01/05/2017 20:09

I read it out loud to my yr 4 and yr 6 dcs...we all loved it! Opened up all kinds of great discussion about inclusion and kindness.

bonbonours · 01/05/2017 21:36

We read it together when dd was about 8 or 9. I think it's too old to read on their own but it was a great one to read together.

Another one to read together is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the nighttime. DD loved it, (I missed out the swearing)

OneOfTheGrundys · 01/05/2017 21:37

Ds just read it age 10. He loved it.
