Book CDs for the car for long road trip?

Any suggestions for audio books to ease the drive to the south of France? Two adults and boy 12, girl 9. Would love to get something that really grips us all, ideally a series. Tough call!

Terry Pratchetts Bromeliad trilogy, and his Wee Free Men, Hat Full of Sky books read by Tony Robinson are excellent

How about 'A short history of nearly everything' by Bill Bryson? It runs for about 5 hrs I think. Failing that, some of the Naxos Junior Classics series are pretty good - they do lots of non-fiction, like Great Scientists or Great Explorers, as well as the more traditional classical fiction. Or maybe the 'Percy Jackson' series?

We love the Alex Rider series here. please don't be put off if you have seen the film. The books are fab.

Just did a five hour drive today listening to Harry Potter audio books, or rather, a small part of Order of the Phoenix. They're narrated by Stephen Fry and are very engaging, but not necessarily cheap. I may be biased though, I've always loved the Harry Potter series.

Roald Dahl. The david Walliams books are great on audio book too, I've had a few from the library.

The graveyard book is good, as is coraline.

The earthsea books.

Antony Horowitz's power of find series.

DS2 loved varjack paw. And the hobbit.

He's currently working his way through the Harry Potter books too.

Also the chronicles of ancient darkness series by Michelle paver. And the septimus heap books by Angie Sage.

DS1 also recommends Artemis Fowl and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Penguin, you could try your library if you're finding them too expensive. My library lets you search the catalogue and order from other libraries in the area so you're not restricted to what's on the shelf.

We get ours through an audible membership, which is cheaper than buying them individually (but you have to subscribe). The audible app is quite good for listening to them (or you can download them).

You can get hem for free from the library and can also order them in if they don't have them.

We always have audio books on the go in the car since school is a 35-40 minute drive away.

Alchemist's son trilogy cd is going down well with DS yr7.

I'd definitely go for Artemis Fowl. A friend recommended it to me on Teepee, my fav new recommendations app, and it kept a 9 and 11 year old entertained for longer than I could have believed!

Roald Dahl and David Walliams, we have some Morpurgo for when we think DS 8 is emotionally ready for them (picked em up second hand for a pound).

We have also worked our way through much of the local library audio CD stock en route to Cornwall.

The Clarice Bean books by Lauren Child are wonderful, I could listen to them again and again.
