DS is almost 10. He reads a lot and especially enjoys fantasy and adventure series. He is currently reading the third book in the Eragon series and loving it but I'm running out of ideas of what to recommend next!

He has read all the Harry Potter books, chronicles of Narnia, Dark is rising. If anyone can recommend any similar series that would be great, thank you

Thank you wonderful mnetters who've mentioned Tamora Pierce! I'm a huge fan and she's so underrated.

Smurfingreat · 19/06/2016 22:56

See your point Spudlet, but I spent my childhood reading stuff like the Famous Five and it never occurred to me that I couldn't be in charge of the gang like Julian, the gender was irrelevant.

They are great books and perfect for that age, would hate to think it wasn't worth suggesting for a boy just caus the protagonists are mainly girls.

Some fabulous suggestions here and I want to add Conrad Mason's Tales of Fayt trilogy.

ForHarry · 19/06/2016 23:03

The fog of forgetting by GA Morgan.

NoMudNoLotus · 19/06/2016 23:07

I was just going to chronicles of narnia as Iv just bought the box set for my DS who likes the same as your DS - but I see he's already read it !

NoMudNoLotus · 19/06/2016 23:10

OP - another vote for Charlie Bone here.

Monroe · 19/06/2016 23:12

Thank you, yes he has.

I forgot to add he's not long finished the maze runner trilogy as well and really enjoyed that also so not just fantasy.

We went to the library on Friday after school. They used to have a separate fantasy and sci fi section but tgey have combined them all now so much harder to find specific books. I thought the Terry Brooks ones would be in the children's section but was told they were all now filed alphabetically which is why I'm asking for ideas so we can go searching for them next time we go

How about the "Shadow of the Dragon" mini series by Kate O'Hearn, and everything else by her as well really! My DS loved those! Fantasy and action with a bit of mystery and myth.
Was also going to suggest Percy Jackson and related books, but you said he's not that interested... And, but these are not fantasy, how about the Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence? I think they're pretty good (read some with DS) and they're somewhat educational, too!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/06/2016 23:16

I read Northern Lights at that age, but it scared me - the children being stolen really upset me. And then when you're daemon had settled and you wouldn't be kidnapped there were things that would attack you then. I might have been a bit of a sensitive soul though...

I love Tamora Pierce too, but thought it was for a slightly older age group?

I think somebody mentioned Redwall earlier, I read it about that age and loved it.

I know what is fun - the Septimus Heap series. I borrowed them from a friend at first but had to have my own set because I wanted to keep re-reading them!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/06/2016 23:17

Please excuse the grammar mistake there, I am well-read, I promise! I'm on my phone and didn't proof read...

Monroe · 19/06/2016 23:25

DS can also be a bit of a sensitive soul, he's quite a "young" 9 year old

He suffers a lot with nightmares and night terrors also so I have to be a bit careful. He's asked more than once to read twilight. I keep telling get him it's romance which puts him off pretty quickly!

I definitely wouldn't give Robin Hobb to a 9 year old!

mrsmortis · 20/06/2016 10:48

Pratchett: Diggers, Truckers, etc. The Amazing Maurice and his educated rodents or Wee Free Men might be a good place to start. Also Only you can save Mankind.

Tamora Peirce - avoid the Lioness books they are probably too YA but the Circle of Magic books are good

Garth Nix: The keys to the kingdom to the seventh tower books.

David Eddings is a good suggestion. Start with Pawn of Prophecy. Also Stephen Lawhead's In the Hall of the Dragon King.

Or how about the YA I was reading at his age: John Christopher's Prince in Waiting books or the Crysalids by John Wyndham

Mominatrix · 20/06/2016 10:56

Rick Riordan - everything

Chris Riddell: Edge Chronicles

Michael Scott: The Alchymist Series

Phillip Pullman: Northern Lights series

Trenton Lee Stewart: The Mysterious Benedict Society series

Maryrose Wood: The Incorrigibles of Ashton Place series

Spudlet · 20/06/2016 17:17

Same here smurfingreat, I just wasn't sure whether a 9yo might be getting to an age to mind? Then hopefully grow out of it later!

Terry Pratchett did some good children's books as mentioned.

Silly question perhaps- but has he read The Hobbit?

Monroe · 20/06/2016 21:23

Yes, he's read the Hobbit.

I've checked the garage and found His Dark Materials, Hogfather and pretty much all of the Feist / Midkemia books but again not sure if these are a bit old for him.

I've written a list of all your suggestions so thanks again Smile

DS loved Alfie Bloom and the secrets of Hexbridge Castle. I think it is meant to be a series eventually but not sure there are any more than that one out yet.

I agree with Diana Wynne Jones (Howl's Moving Castle and the sequels! and the Chrestomanci ones), also maybe some of Ursula Le Guin and Robin McKinley, but you might need to check as they are quite mixed and some definitely too old for him.

Tamora Pierce and also some Mercedes Lackey might be good when he's a bit older, but they do have some more adult bits (especially the latter) so maybe best not quite yet.

I'm sure there are more that I enjoyed but can't think of them right now!

BlueChampagne · 22/06/2016 16:49

How to Train your Dragon (if he hasn't already read it)
A Wizard of Earthsea?
The Phantom Tollbooth
Roman Mysteries

TheDropBear · 26/06/2016 11:44

Ah I wasn't sure if that would be the case with the farseer books, I only read the first one and that was ages ago.
The Ragwitch is an early Garth Nix book, about a brother trying to save his sister who's been possessed by a witch. It's very good but if he gets nightmares easily maybe start him on some of the authors other stuff first.
