Picture Book for year 3 children

Hi, I'm going to be reading to my son's class shortly and would like recommendations for picture books for his age group (7 -8 yo). I'm after a picture book as I feel more confident if I have visuals to show and it will hopefully be short enough to read in one short sitting. If it's funny too, even better. Thanks

This is a fantastic picture book for that age group. It's beautifully illustrated...each picture has some fabulous details and it really touches on the things kids have to deal with daily due to their imaginations.

The little girl goes out for a walk...to the swings and almost immediately falls and hurts her knee...but she's tough and walks home. On the way she meets various classmates who ask what's happened to her knee and for each child she makes up a different tale as to how she hurt herself.

There are wolves, ghosts, witches and gorrillas...each child is impressed with her bravery...then she gets home, her Mum opens the door and she bursts into tears.

All better with a plaster and a hug. It lets kids know that things aren't always as they seem and that things are always ok in the end. it's not sad or scary...just exciting.

Stina is a beautiful book about friendship.
I've read this one to Year 3 before with great success. Lots of fun, whereas the one above has a more serious tone.

I know it's not a picture book but I think that you can't go wrong with Winne the Pooh, what ever age group you are talking about (we had some read to us in an assembly when we were in the sixth form!)

"Fortunately the Milk", by Neil Gaiman. It's definitely a (very, very funny) picture book, and perfect for that age, I'd say - and also ideal to read out loud :)

I love Chris Riddell's illustrations. Do you know his Ottoline books - they're fabulous too, but probably harder to read aloud to a whole class, because so much of the story/humour is within the pictures, IYKWIM.

I think you have to be careful with that age group. I would say the On the way home one is way too young.

Fortunately the Milk is a good bet if you must have pictures. Neil Gaiman is always a good bet.

You could read an extract from Hugo Cabret. It's a beautiful book and the story is told in a combination of words and pictures.
