Books like The Worst Witch

Y2 DD has been struggling to get into chapter books, but she loves The Worst Witch, we're reading the series for the second time. She likes the humour, that it's not too scary and the occasional pictures. She's not really got into Roald Dahl, we've read a few Rainbow fairy books, but I think we all find them a bit dull. Any other ideas for books? I was wondering about other Enid Blyton, she seemed to like the whole boarding school thing. She's also recently enjoyed THe Cat who Wanted to Go Home.

Has she tried Pippi Longstocking?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/09/2015 21:31

Also Lauren Child's Clarice Bean. Good idea re Enid Blyton - seems to still be popular.

TapStepBallChange · 17/09/2015 21:42

Just seem Pippi Lonstocking on Amazon, looks promising. Will dig out Clarice Bean too

Also just seen the Sophie books by Dick King-Smith? I've not heard of them, are they any good?

Princess Mirabelle by Julia Donaldson is one of dd1's favourites, she's also a Worst Witch fan. She also likes Emily Feather.

I wish she found the rainbow magic books as boring as your dd does, they're all the same!

And The Magic Faraway Tree Smile

SevenSeconds · 17/09/2015 21:47

My DD likes the Worst Witch, now we're on Horrid Henry and the Ramona books

Nicknamegrief · 17/09/2015 21:47

Chris riddle's books, ottoline and goth girl.

PepperMallow · 17/09/2015 21:52

I second the Enid Blyton Faraway Tree trilogy.

My dd really enjoys some books about a girl called violet mackerel, can't remember the name of the author. They are set in the real world though, my dd not really into the rainbow fairy ones either (thankfully). I wanted to try worst witch books with her as I loved them, I also like my naughty little sister books too and am looking forward to reading these to her

Thank you, loving all the recommendations. We have Faraway Tree but she's not interested.

We read 3 rainbow fairy books in quick succession and I think even DD realised they were all the same, someone gave us 20 or so, I might have to hide at least 10 so she doesn't get ideas

Paddington, horrid Henry, my naughty little sister. They may be a bit easy but they are fun.

Milly Molly Mandy for when you want real retro.

Little house in the big woods. Then little house on the prairie, etc.
Carbonel
Gobbolino
Orlando
If you can get hold of them, though not proper chapter books, the church mice series.

Look for early Rumer Godden, eg a Holly and Ivy.

Emil and the detectives
Lottie and Lisa

Second Chris Riddell

Similar level:
Sophie and the Shadow Woods

a little more challenging:
Wings Fairy Detective Agency
Witchworld nosycrow.com/product/witchworld/

My worst witch loving DD is now hooked on the Naughtiest Girl books.

ThomasRichard · 18/09/2015 14:28

Pongwhiffy, A Witch of Dirty Habits. I loved the series when I was little.

Linds53 · 19/09/2015 11:37

My daughter loved the Molly Moon books by Georgia Byng and Holly Webb's Rose series. They are both about girls with magical powers.

mrsmortis · 22/09/2015 14:33

The Sophie books are brilliant. My DD loves them. We have them as audiobooks and they are comfort listening when she's ill. Any of the other early Dick King Smith books would work too. My mum's favourite is Saddlebottom and she read that with DD this summer.

Eva Ibbotson writes some fantastic story books. I would highly recommend, 'The Secret of Platform 13'. I don't actually have a child yet (14 weeks pregnant) but I'm writing a children's book so I immerse myself in lots of children's fiction (and have to admit I love reading it too, can't wait to be reading stories to my own children!). I loved the Worst Witch series when I was younger and Eva's books are definitely on parr. Hope this helps. :)
