Just that really. He read all the HP books over the summer holidays and it seems to have really whet his appetite for reading. I'd love to keep him interested so was just looking for some ideas for what he could read next.

He has read and enjoyed most of David walliam's books and is currently reading the spirit animals books. I'd thought about Philip Pullman but not sure if he is a bit too young yet.

Any ideas appreciated!

How lovely that he's got his teeth into reading! To read all the HP over the summer is good going. My class of similar aged kids love the Percy Jackson novels by Rick Riordan. Link to Greek mythology if he's that way inclined too.????Watching for other recommendations too.

Also Michael Morpurgo. Kensuke's Kingdom is a fantastic novel that I enjoyed as an adult.

Datschi · 16/09/2015 15:15

If he likes the whole wizard and magic thing, then Eva Ibbotson is v good.
I would especially recommend "The Secret of Platform 13" and "Dial a Ghost" but she has written lots.

If he likes the boarding school side of things, then the Jennings books are excellent, and don't seem too old-fashioned despite when they were written.

YY to Percy Jackson, also

Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo
Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones
Lionboy trilogy by Zizou Corder

Yes to Percy Jackson, we love those books. Perhaps The Dark Is Rising if he fancies some classic children/YA reading based around Arthurian legend?

LMGTFY · 16/09/2015 16:33

Another one to recommend Percy Jackson, that'll then lead on to other Rick riordan series.

Monroe · 16/09/2015 19:48

Thank you all

He has read the first 2 percy Jacksons so will certainly dig out some more.

Sadik and Datschi I haven't heard of those authors, I'll definitely look them up.

tribpot I loved the dark is rising series when I was younger, I think I might even still have them all somewhere. Wonder if he'll start letting me read to him again Smile

He mentioned he had started reading war horse in school and was enjoying that and maybe he might like the Narnia books?

He is just going through books so quickly! I love that he loves reading but I'm struggling to keep up. I'll have to get him to the library soon.

Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve - week written, a series and slightly different from HP as dystopian and steampunk but very good

Sadik · 16/09/2015 22:19

If he likes charlie bone or Chrestomanci, both authors have written lots of other books :)

atticusclaw2 · 16/09/2015 22:25

The secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel. DS1 loves the series and they're about Nicholas Flamel (from the Philosopher's stone).

MsInterpret · 16/09/2015 22:46

Definitely get to the library. I was such a bookworm as a child and used to always get the maximum 16(!?) books out on my lib card each time. DM used to say it was the highlight of her week because dSis and I would have noses in books and wouldn't be pestering her for once!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 16/09/2015 22:56

The Mysterious Benedict Society has gone down well with HP loving DD - also the Lemony Snicket Series of Unfortunate Events (though they are darker) and the How to Train Your Dragon books.

BlueChampagne · 18/09/2015 12:19

You could try "The Hobbit" or "Travel Light"
Also "Wolves of Willoughby Chase" series

Linds53 · 19/09/2015 11:32

Cornelia Funke's Inkheart trilogy, City of Ember by Jeanne Du Prau. my son loved Anthony Horowitz too.

mrsmortis · 22/09/2015 14:36

How about some Garth Nix? I'd suggest Mister Monday, etc. Or the seven towers books. Or maybe A Confusion of Princes.
