Book & Film for ds(11)

Thinking ahead to Christmas and I usually get ds books with the DVD of the film too. He reads the books first then watches the films.

Last couple of years he has got and loved all the Harry Potter books and DVD's, then all the Percy Jackson ones (all the books, but only 2 DVD's released).

Tried Warhorse and the film, but he hasn't picked up the book yet, preferring all the Percy Jackson books.

He's got the Hobbit films already, has the Narnia collection of books. He's seen the hunger games DVD's but not read the books yet. Got Wimpy kid.

Any recommendations for book/DVD combination he hasn't got yet?

Howl's moving castle for something a bit different.

Eagle if the 9th.

Box of Delights-there's a BBC one that's really good.

39 steps or Prisoner of Zenda (both b/w films I think) we watched at school in year 5 and I then read the books.

If he likes Hunger Games, then the Divergent books/movies would be an obvious choice if he hasn't read/seen them. The films are well done, worth watching even as an adult.

If he's seen those, what about Eragon? I reckon if he likes HP & PJ they'd appeal, though I should say that dd said the film was a travesty. (However she did say the same about the Percy Jackson movies!)

Witchend, is there a new Box of Delights adaptation? We watched the old BBC one a while back, and found it very dated.

A final thought - has he read the Roman Mysteries? Again TV series rather than film, but the adaptations are very good. The DVDs are a bit pricey though, we got them out on rental.

Just thought of another one. Haven't read/seen it myself, but DD liked "I am Number Four", and said the film was pretty good.

(She's 13 now, but it was a while back she read it when she was into dystopian/thriller type stuff)

Maze Runner (a set of the books are cheap in The Works or The Book People)

balletgirlmum · 14/09/2015 12:02

Ds also aged 11 loves Maze Runner

Dd loves Divergent as suggested but I always got the impression ftom her they were more aimed at girls.

Has he read the Alex Rider books? The first one, Stormbreaker is a film.

MoltenBrownChocolate · 14/09/2015 12:09

Holes by Louis sachar. Although I think the film is rated 12.

No more than Hunger Games, I'd have said, balletgirlmum. The lead character is a girl, and there's a bit of romance, but less so (& less significant to the plot) than in the hunger games.

balletgirlmum · 14/09/2015 12:12

Ds enjoyed Hunger Games so I might suggest he borrows his sisters Divergent then.

The book - "The Invention of Hugo Cabret", and its film by Scorsese, "Hugo".
Bridge to Terabithia - book and film
Tuck Everlasting - book and film
The Never-Ending Story - book and film
The Princess Bride - ditto

The Secret Garden/Railway Children/Little Princess.
Little Women

I think the book of Howl's Moving Castle is quite complex compared to the film - but a good possible.

Maze Runner is good as the first film was fairly true to the first book

Trash by Andy Mulligan - good book and the film reviews look ok

Lots of good ideas, thank you. Got a few in my amazon basket and will get them for Xmas and birthday early next year!
