Books for DD to read before Grammar School

DD (10) is an avid reader & wants a list of books to read before she starts Grammar School next year.

Although I am a keen reader now I was never encouraged as a child & so I am unsure what's out there in terms of classics. We have one small bookshop that I take her to regularly but I can order online or go to the library so all suggestions are welcome.

She had read Harry Potter, David Walliams collection, Eynid Blyton & lots of other collections. I was wondering if there's any books that are a must read for children or One's that she wil remember fondly when she's an adult.

Thanks.

I remember reading Carrie's War in yr 7 at grammar school and enjoying it but I'm afraid I can't remember who wrote it.
I would like to read some of the children's classics like Swallows and Amazons or the Jungle Book just because I've never read them!

hels71 · 18/07/2015 18:40

Nina Bawden wrote Carrie's War.

It's a good list of classics from the Guardian, but very white. Disappointing from them.

Noughts and Crosses Malorie Blackman
Journey to Jo'berg Beverley Naidoo
Jamila Gavin.

Oh thank you all for the replies. I'll have a look on amazon now & take DD to the library. We have a kindle but like me she prefers real books. So no freebies unfortunately.

Has she read the little house on the prairie series? I think I enjoyed those when I was ten. Also Marianne Dreams is considered a bit of a classic (it's a frightening story though).

mrsmortis · 23/07/2015 15:16

Little House in the Big Woods and all it's sequels.
The Hobbit
The Dolphin Crossing
Narnia
The Owl Service
A Wrinkle in Time and it's sequels
The Chrysalids by John Wyndham
The Prince in Waiting books by John Christopher (and the Tripods too if you think they aren't too frightening)

I remember reading 'animal farm' by Orwell, 'the chrysalids' by wyndham (didn't really enjoy that one) and 'the endless steppe ' by Esther hautzig (i think? Remember finding it very moving) in year 7 at grammar school. Although thinking about it possibly too late...
