DD is in Y1 and a keen reader. I don't understand reading levels but keen on reading silently to herself . I am looking for some ideas of books with chapters she could read to herself but where the story itself isn't too 'old'.

TIA.

Forgot my favourite ever book from childhood - The Farthest Away Mountain by Lynne Reid Banks. A wonderful adventure with a brilliant heroine.

Also look at the fabulous Oliver and Seawigs novel from Sarah McIntyre and Philip Reeve

DS enjoys the ladybird classics series, which is abridged versions of classic stories (including Alice in Wonderland) aimed at young children.

He also loves the Claude books as mentioned by someone else.
