Books for me to read to my 7yo dd to read

She is in year 2 and reading secret seven series to herself atm and I wanted to try and read something a bit more complicated to her, instead of reading books she could read and comprehend by herself.

So I tried Carbonel but bits were going over her head.

Any suggestions? I would hate to ruin a book by reading it to her 'too early' - so she doesn't fully understand it. But would like to read something above her current reading level.

The first Laura Ingalls Wilder - Little House in the Big Woods - is lovely.

DD also enjoyed having Swallows and Amazons read to her at that age, although it's quite a long book, there's nothing incomprehensible to a 6 y/o.

Another vote for How To Train Your Dragon (also amusing as an adult, which is nice).

I'm not sure I fully understand the Moomintrolls now, and I'm 45

We're reading a lovely series of books recommended on here - Violet Mackerel.

The last book I read ti dd1 was Violet Mackerel and she really enjoyed it. I must get the rest of the series.

I think Swallows and Amazons will be my next choice for us to read together.

She did enjoy Pippi Longstocking.

I did try David Walliams - the Auntie one - but some of the references were going over her head so I thought I would wait a bit longer.

She didn't seem gripped by the how to train your dragon book - hoping that will change.

The Laura Ingells book is a good idea to try as well.

We've read the Faraway tree series - it was much loved

All books that my DC would struggle with themselves but loved the storied

DS who is 6 is v into Roald Dahl at mo. Have read James and Giant Peach, BFG, Giraffe the pelly and me, Fantastic Mr Fox and George's Marvellous medicine, Charlie and the chocolate Factory so far. Book people do the set very cheaply.

Thanks for reminder about the faraway tree - I had forgotten it entirely.

Random's list of Roald Dahl's is right for this age. I'd avoid, for now, Matilda, The Witches, and Boy.

My DD is 7 too, and has enjoyed lots of the books mentioned above, especially Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I tend to find more "old fashioned" stuff goes over her head more and uses much more complicated language, but we enjoy reading them together.

We have just finished Heidi, which she loved, and have started on Peter Pan, which she is really enjoying (but I am having to explain words and concepts to her right, left and centre!)

I have tried Roald Dahl - the easier ones she reads to herself anyway, but we started the Witches and she was sobbing with fear a few nights in because it was too scary (maybe she is just over-sensitive). I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would be good though, or Matilda.

I am planning on trying The Borrowers once we have finished Peter Pan, and I also thought she might enjoy What Katy Did, and Black Beauty, A Little Princess, and maybe The Children of Greene Knowe - all of which were books I enjoyed around that age, and that I recently retrieved during a raid on my parents' attic.
