Need a Story for my Less Able Year 6 Group!

I'm looking for a short story to use as inspiration for narrative writing for my Year 6 English group.

It needs to be quite simple but perhaps end on a cliffhanger or have ideas which might inspire them to write a story of their own.

What about clockwork by Philip Pullman? (not sure if that's short enough)

BaconAndAvocado · 20/05/2015 20:09

That sounds interesting, what's it about and where would I find it?

What's your objective? What's your plan? What do you want the to achieve?

BaconAndAvocado · 20/05/2015 20:16

The objective is for them to produce a piece of narrative, to include some dialogue, and lots of descriptive writing, including simile and metaphor.

It's about a storyteller who's story starts to come true, and a clockmaker, and a prince - lots of directions you could take it in. It might be longer than you wanted though.

Way Home by Libby Hathorn. A picture book, but an amazing story about a homeless boy. I have read it with less able year five children. There are resources on tes or there's the Power of Reading scheme.

Look on page 5.

You could ask children to write a narrative continuing the story/an end to it.

cosmicglittergirl · 20/05/2015 20:20

Clockwork is also a good book.

I'm not a teacher and my DC are younger than your class, but how about...

The Arrival - Shaun Tan (actually, pretty much anything by Shaun Tan)

The Tunnel - Anthony Browne

Journey - Aaron Becker

How to Live Forever - Colin Thompson

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick - Chris Ban Allsburg (or The Chronicles Of Harris Burdick, where authors have written their own short stories to match the illustrations)

The Wolves in the Walls - Neil Gaiman

Chris Van Allsburg

Why not try this brilliant app, which is for children 3-11 years and is personalised story telling at its best.

Fortunately the Milk could be fun for all.

Have decided on using the start of an abridged version of Dracula. They always love a bit of horror!

How about Wonder by RJ Palacio? There's certainly a lot in there for discussion. Really captivating.
