Need a Story for my Less Able Year 6 Group!

I'm looking for a short story to use as inspiration for narrative writing for my Year 6 English group.

It needs to be quite simple but perhaps end on a cliffhanger or have ideas which might inspire them to write a story of their own.

What's your objective? What's your plan? What do you want the to achieve?

The objective is for them to produce a piece of narrative, to include some dialogue, and lots of descriptive writing, including simile and metaphor.

It's about a storyteller who's story starts to come true, and a clockmaker, and a prince - lots of directions you could take it in. It might be longer than you wanted though.

Way Home by Libby Hathorn. A picture book, but an amazing story about a homeless boy. I have read it with less able year five children. There are resources on tes or there's the Power of Reading scheme.

You could ask children to write a narrative continuing the story/an end to it.

How about Wonder by RJ Palacio? There's certainly a lot in there for discussion. Really captivating.
