I am on the hunt for books I read as a child to give to dd1.

I read lots but can only remember Enid Blyton books.

What did you read that may trigger my memories?

OP posts:

I loved 'Charlotte Sometimes' by Penelope Farmer, 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing' and subsequent books by Judy Blume and 'Sweet Valley High'.

LondonRocks · 03/05/2015 00:10

Mallory Towers
St Clare's
Nancy Drew
The Hardy Boys
Judy Blume
Malcolm Savill
The Secret Garden
A Little Princess

Glittermud · 03/05/2015 00:14

Lois Duncan. I was a bit obsessed with her.

Worst witch.

Enid Blyton.

Forest of Doom (and any other ' choose your adventure' book).

Glittermud · 03/05/2015 00:17

Oh, and Tom's Midnight Garden. And Conrad the Factory Made Boy. And Mrs. Pepperpot.

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 03/05/2015 00:20

Books by E Nesbit, Enid Blyton of course, Willand Price adventure series, Jennings and Darbyshire, all the C S Lewis and Arthur Ransome books, and a series of books which Alfred Hitchcock gave his name to about kids who investigated stuf. I also loved the Swish of the Curtain, and Ballet Shoes and the others by the same author. There were also lots of.historical novels by Rosemary Sutcliffe I think. They made one of her Roman ones into a film I think. The Eagle of the Ninth I think.

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 03/05/2015 00:21

Willard not Willand. And so many I thinks!

YonicScrewdriver · 03/05/2015 00:50

Like others, Noel Streatfield (ballet shoes etc)
Joan Aiken (The Wolves of Willoughby Chase etc)
Diana Wynn Jones (Howl's moving castle etc)
The Dark Is Rising sequence
My Friend Flicka etc
Chalet School

TatTheCat · 03/05/2015 01:04

Fallulah that was Paula Danziger - 'There's a bat in bunk five'. She also wrote 'Can you sue your parents for malpractice'. Both of these, and all Judy Blume, read many times in my teenage years.

Fallulah · 03/05/2015 10:50

Yes! That's it - thank you!

stevienickstophat · 03/05/2015 11:14

Enid Blyton - especially the Five Find-Outers and The Wishing Chair. Ooh, and The Faraway Tree.
The original Mr Men books when I was very young.
The Haunting of Cassie Palmer.
Goodnight Mr Tom.
Betsy Byars books - I loved her. Also Paula Danziger, Lois Duncan and Judy Blume.
The Sweet Dreams series of trashy US romances.
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
Little Women.
Ballet Shoes.
The What Katy Did books.
Roald Dahl.
Pam Ayres poetry Blush
Jackie, Blue Jeans and Misty annuals.

I adored reading. Still do. It's the love of my life.

UncertainTea · 05/05/2015 12:48

Goodnight Mr Tom
A book about a brother and sister (A...?) who were sent off to knight training/convent except they switched places and the girl trained to be a knight and the brother a monk.
Enid Blyton
Narnia series
There was a series about a family whose parents walked out and left them with an address of a relative across the country. They then trekked across to this relative surviving on very little. When they had settled in new school the teacher asked for a piece of work on how little money a family could survive on and the eldest sister wrote how she had fed her brothers and sisters and was told it wasn't possible. That stuck with me, but I cant remember the title.
frozen you may have just given me a clue to a historical series I've been looking for ever since my Dd was born!

Jackieharris · 05/05/2015 12:51

The babysitters club
Anastasia krupnik
Nancy Drew
Sweet valley
Jude Blume
Ronald Dahl

balletnotlacrosse · 05/05/2015 14:18

"Ballet Shoes..the original before they messed about with it and wrote strange updated sequels and prequels."

What were they? I frequently re-read Noel Streatfeild and am not aware of any rewritten versions of Ballet shoes or updated sequels.

Fallulah · 05/05/2015 20:07

Perhaps they aren't actual sequels but she wrote a lot of 'shoes' books after Ballet Shoes and I remember being really disappointed by them. Something to do with ice skating too I think.

"A book about a brother and sister (A...?) who were sent off to knight training/convent except they switched places and the girl trained to be a knight and the brother a monk."

Oh gosh I remember that! The girl was called Allanah I think. I loved those books!

DementedSwan · 05/05/2015 21:37

Misty
Stormy mistys foal
The children of cherry tree farm/willow farm series
Rats of nimh
Water ship down
Adrian's mole
Else the lioness
Chalet school
Just William
Animals of farthing wood
Lord of the rings
The hobbit
Hans Christian Anderson

All of Enid Blyton, judy Blume, babysitters club, sweet valley.

I pretty much lived in the library and read anything.

I was born late 70's.

DementedSwan · 05/05/2015 21:39

Yes to the lion witch and wardrobe too.

And wasn't there a pony club series too?

HammerToFall · 05/05/2015 21:43

Don't know if it's been mentioned but definitely Paul danziger

MissRabbitsCV · 05/05/2015 21:53

What about the Lorna Hill Sadlers Wells books? Are they even published anymore?!

balletnotlacrosse · 06/05/2015 11:19

I agree that White Boots isn't one of Noel Streatfeild's best. But books like The Painted Garden, Tennis Shoes, and Curtain Up are excellent, although none of her books lives up to Ballet Shoes which is a classic.

EnlightenedOwl · 09/05/2015 19:09

Judith M Berrisford "Jackie and Misty" "Skipper" (books about white Alsatian)
Trebizon
Enid Blyton - Malory Towers St Clares Secret Seven Famous Five, Findouters, also by Blyton Shadow the Sheepdog, Children of Green Meadows (nice book that),
Ruby Ferguson - Jill Pony books
Mary Gervaise pony books - Georgie and Spot
Patricia Leitch - Jinny and Shantih, Dream of Fair Horses, etc
Chalet School

siiiiiiiiigh · 09/05/2015 19:28

stig of the dump
skellig
my friend flicka
milly molly mandy
The Midnight Fox - betsy byres. A totally underrated, US author. If you have an introverted 8 year old boy - wow. Her characters are just beautifully written.

ConcreteElephant · 09/05/2015 19:36

Siiiiiiiigh, I loved Milly Molly Mandy!

DMIL has just bought DD a reissued vintage looking edition (her DD enjoyed it as a child but she had no idea I'd loved it too) and the memories have come flooding back as I read it with DD. It's just delightful and I find I almost remember it word for word.

I also really liked Five Dolls in a House. I wish I'd kept that one.

Yellowaveo59 · 09/05/2015 19:39

Goosebumps

HappySpills · 09/05/2015 19:40

The Bagthorpe Saga, starting with Ordinary Jack, by Helen Cresswell, was great.

Tanaqui · 09/05/2015 19:42

The alanna books are by Tamora Pierce- the first one is song of the lioness.

I don't know the travelling children one but it sounds good!

Also love noel streatfeild, Diana wynne jones, chalet school, Antonio forest's Marlowe books.

More recent authors to try might be Hilary McKay, or Sarah Rees Brennan? (Older than 7!)
