Help me. I'm addicted. By hook or by crook I obtained two Antonia Forest paperbacks at low prices. It was not enough. Now I've just bought another for thirty sodding quid I can ill afford, comforting myself with the knowledge that I can always economise on clothes.

I know I am not alone. Please tell me your stories of absurd expenditure of money and effort to secure a favourite.

Twins, alliteration, strong, silent men who propagated and disappeared.

LifeHuh · 12/05/2015 20:53

Antonia Forest Fanfic? My recommendation is Dangers Untold, Hardships Unnumbered . Have just realised I can't say why as it'd be a spoiler!

Icimoi · 29/05/2015 23:20

I related to Karen when she said the reason she found it difficult being Head Girl was that she could see no reason why the younger girls should obey her. I never reached such giddy heights, but I had a similar problem on reaching the sixth form when we were expected to exert some sort of discipline over the junior forms.

LaurieMarlow · 30/05/2015 21:34

You've got it all wrong. LAURIE Marlowe is worth £30, not bloody Nicola Confused

Come on, aren't the play scenes the best part by a country mile? And we all know what a crap Shepherd boy Nicola would have made, right?

stomps off

Lawriemarlow · 30/05/2015 21:38

I think you'll find it's Lawrie Marlow :)

ancientbuchanan · 31/05/2015 00:27

Bloody Lawrie. Typical.

ZeroFunDame · 31/05/2015 01:46

Oh FFS why do I do this to myself. Had managed to swerve this thread till half an hour ago - and now look! No one had told me that GGB published Gwendoline Courtney ...

As regards AF I'd read everything that was available at the time but can't remember which I owned. I remember finding them revelatory. I've just ordered Traitor. (The only thing is, I've been begging one of my favourite publishers for years to do AF. I guess that won't happen if GGB have got the gig.)

At one time I owned all but Prefects of the CS and one or two others. Various losses used to make me sad - but when I joined a CS thread here and re-read a couple I found the writing had lost its grip on my soul, though the stories are permanently embedded.

LaurieMarlow · 31/05/2015 11:35

And why can't I spell my name how I want? It's my name, none of you can tell me what to do.

Betcha Nicola would get away with it but then she gets away with bloody murder, everyone's favourite, not fair

ancientbuchanan · 01/06/2015 21:15

And that's why we all hate Lawrie/Laurie. Or get bored...sigh... Such a drama brat....

Ps, looking at that wonderful Trennells site is Miranda gay ? Had never struck me before..

ZeroFunDame · 08/06/2015 06:01

"The Marlows and the Traitor" was excellent. (Finished it about an hour ago, having started around 1 this morning.)Brew

Thank you RustyBearFlowers

I know this is a Zombie-ish thread but my love of the Marlows is so much I study had to re-read it. And then people started talking about Masha. I loved those books and wanted to let fellow fans know they have been re-printed and are available on Amazon at reasonable prices.

The Masha books are only print novels I have bought in five years - a measure of how desperate I was to re-read them. Apart from them I am totally reliant on kindle for pleasure reading. Why are GGB so reluctant to release the Marlow books as E-books?

I have every Marlow book in paper form and re-read them often , but some copies are 40+ years old and stored in Jiffy bags to keep the pages in order. I cannot wait for the day they will all be available online and I can carry them round in my handbag.

MontyPythonsFlyingFuck · 04/06/2017 20:34

Another post on a zombie thread, but wanted to alert fellow Marlow fans to the fact that GGB is preparing to publish End of Term (probably my favourite, and due to my propensity for dropping books in the bath I'm planning to buy a back-up copy). Also, for anyone who isn't already on it, there's an AF page on Facebook - not massively active but has flurries of interesting discussions.

Bloodybridget · 09/06/2017 15:34

Thanks for the heads up, MontyPythonsFF. Must check what sort of state my copy of EOT is in, an extra one would probably be a good buy.
I am so sorry that all the read through posts on Trennels have gone.

NotCitrus · 09/06/2017 16:04

Trennels lives! It's at trennels.dreamwidth.org - most of Livejournal decamped to Dreamwidth a few months ago when the Russian owners demanded users agree new ToC which let them delete mentions of homosexuality etc.

For more Marlow fixes, Archive Of Our Own has a fair bit of fanfiction. Of course I've now had to buy Mary Renault books to understand various Marlow/Renault crossovers...

HumphreyCobblers · 09/06/2017 16:08

Is there more than one Renault crossover? I know about the Mask of Apollo one.

So funny, I jumped on this thread only to see I was the first respondent of the original.

BertrandRussell · 09/06/2017 16:10

Good news, notcitrus!

BertrandRussell · 09/06/2017 16:11

The Mask of Apollo is a wonderful book.....

HumphreyCobblers · 09/06/2017 16:33

Oh it IS! So is The Praise Singer.

I love all of them with a passion.

BertrandRussell · 09/06/2017 16:40

Have you read The Charioteer? I read it when I was about 13, and it informed a lot of my thinking.

BroomstickOfLove · 09/06/2017 16:43

Thanks for resurrecting the zombie.
To continue the fanfic theme, I read a lovely non-Marlowe Mary Renault fanfic the other week, and I'm sharing it to anyone who might like it. It's the Alexander Trilogy set in an Oxford college rowing crew.

HumphreyCobblers · 09/06/2017 16:51

Only just read it, it has slipped my radar until very recently.

It is an excellent book.

That looks interesting Broomstick.

I just re-read Fire From Heaven and The Persian Boy. I can't bear to read Funeral Games again.

BroomstickOfLove · 09/06/2017 17:53

You know what? I've just realised that Funeral Games upset me so much that I convinced myself that The Persian Boy was the third book and there was a book between Fire from Heaven and The Persian Boy which I had read but didn't own.

I've borrowed The Charioteer from the library , but haven't started it yet.

Asmoto · 09/06/2017 18:03

I know it's a zombie thread, but couldn't resist boasting that I have a full set of Forests! It took me years to collect them, and I didn't finish until GGB republished the rarer ones. If only AF had completed the book she was working on before she died. We will never know what Nicola said to Esther the term after RAH Sad.

OrlandaFuriosa · 09/06/2017 18:03

I adored Renault but haven't read for years: will I still like her ?

( see I contributed to this discussion years ago under another name..,)
